Overview

Product Pins show details such as price and availability, then link to the retailer’s website. Merchants can distribute them organically and feature them on a profile by saving them to a public board. That makes Pinterest a discovery channel rather than an end-to-end social storefront; teams that need native checkout should look elsewhere.

A business account lets merchants tag products and create Product Pins, while ads and enhanced distribution require merchant review. Rich Pins sync product information from a merchant’s website, but cannot be promoted in shopping ads.

Key features

Catalogs and product feeds

Catalog uploads create Product Pins at scale, organize products into groups, and support shopping ads. Data sources can use TSV, CSV, XML (RSS 2.0 or ATOM 1.0), or Google Sheets, and a retail catalog can contain up to 20 million products. That ceiling suits broad inventories, but setup requires a business account, a claimed website, the Pinterest tag, and a site that meets merchant guidelines. The free entry point therefore still assumes a configured web presence.

Integrations and distribution

Pinterest lists Adobe Commerce, Nuvemshop, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, Shopify, VTEX, and WooCommerce as third-party integrations for product uploads. Catalog-created Product Pins can be promoted as shopping ads; Rich Pins cannot. Merchants should distinguish between being able to create Pins with a business account and qualifying for ads or enhanced distribution after merchant review.

Checkout and data practices

Pinterest sends shoppers to the merchant’s own app or website rather than handling checkout on the platform. This preserves the retailer’s off-platform purchase flow, but does not provide native social checkout. Pinterest says it analyzes log and device data to investigate suspicious behavior and describes system security as a legitimate interest. Merchants needing help can contact Pinterest support through its shopping help page.

Pricing

Pinterest Shopping — 0.00 USD per free. Product listings and putting products on Pinterest are free; campaigns are paid. Only catalog-created Product Pins can be promoted as shopping ads. This suits merchants testing product discovery without a listing fee, while teams seeking paid distribution should budget for campaigns and account for merchant review.

The free listing offer is not a complete commerce stack: retailers need a qualifying website and shoppers leave Pinterest to buy. It is a weaker fit for sellers who want checkout to stay inside a social platform.

Platforms

Pinterest Shopping supports Android, iOS, web, and API. Its integrations span several commerce platforms, while catalog feeds can also be supplied through common file formats or Google Sheets.

Who it's for

It fits merchants who already operate a website, maintain product data, and want Pinterest as an additional organic discovery channel, with the option to pursue shopping ads after review. It is less suitable for teams without a claimed site and Pinterest tag, or those whose commerce strategy depends on native social checkout.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free product listings provide a low-cost route to organic discovery, and merchants can feature Pins on public boards.
Pros: Catalogs support multiple feed formats, several commerce integrations, and up to 20 million products per retail catalog.
Cons: Catalog setup depends on a business account, claimed website, Pinterest tag, and compliance with merchant guidelines.
Cons: Purchases happen on the merchant’s app or website, not through Pinterest checkout.
Cons: Ads and enhanced distribution require merchant review, and only catalog-created Product Pins can be promoted as shopping ads.

Verdict

Choose Pinterest Shopping if you have a functioning web store and catalog and want free product listings with organic discovery. The strongest reason to use it is the combination of catalog scale and unpaid distribution; the main reason to choose another platform is the absence of on-platform checkout, alongside website and review requirements for catalog and ad use.
