Overview

Rive combines an editor for creating animation with open-source runtimes for running Rive files natively. Its integrations span Web, iOS, macOS, Android, Flutter, React, React Native, Unity and Unreal, while runtime categories also include consoles, TVs and vehicles. That reach makes it a plausible fit for teams building interactive products across more than one target, rather than those seeking only a standalone animation tool.

The editor is available as a desktop app, with CLI support for macOS, Linux and Windows. Export formats include RIV, REV, MP4, GIF, PNG sequence and WebM. Rive describes its GPU-accelerated renderer as running at 120fps with perfect quality; that stated performance is relevant to teams targeting responsive runtime animation, though project fit still depends on their chosen integration and requirements.

Key features

2D animation and rigging: Motion graphics and character rigging cover two common needs in app and game production, keeping Rive relevant where animated characters or interface motion need to be authored together.
Collaboration: Free permits three collaborative files, while Cadet and Voyager allow unlimited files. Teams that outgrow the free file cap can move up, but seat limits remain: three on Cadet and 25 on Voyager.
Agent: Free and Cadet include an Agent with limits; Voyager adds advanced models. Teams that depend on advanced Agent models need Voyager, while smaller teams can start lower if the limited Agent suffices.
Open runtimes: Open-source runtimes run Rive files natively on platforms. This is a meaningful fit for teams integrating animation into products, not just exporting finished clips.

Pricing

Rive is freemium. The Free plan costs $0 per seat per month and includes editor access, three collaborative files, one project and a 10 MB imported-asset limit. It is suitable for learning and small experiments, but the project, file and asset caps constrain sustained production.

Cadet costs $9.00 USD per month (billed Annual view) and allows up to three seats with unlimited files. It is the practical step up for a small team shipping work, though its Agent remains limited and the seat cap rules out larger groups. Voyager costs $32.00 USD per month (billed Annual view), allows up to 25 seats and unlimited files, and includes an Agent with advanced models. It fits broader collaboration when those capabilities justify the higher per-month plan price.

Enterprise costs $120.00 USD per month (billed Annual view) and is for organizations with $10M+ annual revenue. It adds SSO and SOC2 Type II, dedicated support, a dedicated Slack channel, onboarding, training, custom S3 storage and the option to bring Rive to custom platforms, engines, products or hardware. Those provisions target large organizations needing security and deployment support; the revenue threshold makes it a poor fit for smaller teams.

Platforms

The editor is a desktop app, and its CLI supports macOS, Linux and Windows. Rive content runs natively on mobile, desktop, web, consoles, TVs and vehicles. Listed integrations include Web, iOS, macOS, Android, Flutter, React, React Native, Unity and Unreal, giving teams several routes to incorporate animation into an existing stack.

Who it's for

Rive is strongest for builders who need 2D animation, rigging or motion graphics to ship inside apps, games or other products, especially when runtime integration and cross-platform reach matter. Free is a sensible way to learn or prototype; Cadet suits small shipping teams, while Voyager is better aligned with larger collaboration groups or teams needing advanced Agent models. Teams needing only a conventional animation export, or whose target stack does not align with Rive's runtimes and integrations, should compare other tools before committing.

Pros and cons

Pro: Open-source runtimes and integrations across web, mobile and game engines make Rive useful for product animation that must run in context.
Pro: The Free plan includes editor access and a route to try collaborative files without a paid subscription.
Con: Free is capped at three collaborative files, one project and 10 MB imported assets, limiting its usefulness for larger production work.
Con: Cadet tops out at three seats and Voyager at 25, so team size can force a plan change even when file storage is unlimited.
Con: Advanced Agent models are reserved for Voyager, making them inaccessible on the lower tiers.

Alternatives

For a narrower 2D animation workflow, the alternatives below vary in platform coverage and licensing. SpineBones is a free macOS and Windows option with a 300-frame timeline, playback up to 120 FPS, and WebM, PNG sequence and sprite sheet exports; choose it when those defined export and timeline needs matter more than Rive's runtime integration breadth. Spriter has a free version with PNG and spritesheet animation and basic features, plus a $59.99 USD per month Pro plan for one user; it may suit a single-user workflow centered on those outputs.

Effekseer is free and open source, making it worth considering when that licensing model is the priority. LibreSprite is also free and open source under GNU General Public License Version 2, for readers who prefer that option. SkelForm is a free and open-source 2D skeletal animator, a straightforward alternative to consider for that specific format of work.

Live2D Cubism is another freemium option with a free trial and a $13.26 USD per month month-by-month Cubism PRO for indie plan, for readers comparing a flexible monthly paid plan. Creature is a paid Windows option with a trial whose export functions are disabled; its Pro upgrade from Basic is $99.00 USD per once with a perpetual license. Spine is a paid Linux, macOS and Windows alternative with a free trial; its Essential plan is $99.00 USD per month at the stated non-sale price and includes basic features and exports to every supported format.

Verdict

Choose Rive if you need to author 2D animation and rigging that can run natively across a broad set of product platforms, with open runtimes and integrations that fit web, mobile or game-engine stacks. Its free tier is useful for learning, and paid plans scale file access and collaboration, but the file and seat caps and Voyager-only advanced Agent models are real constraints. Look elsewhere if your work does not need Rive's runtime approach or if a simpler, narrowly scoped animation tool better fits your workflow.
