Overview

Plane combines automated payments with contractor accounts for submitting payment requests and checking their status. Payments span 240+ countries and 70+ local currencies, with no e-wallet required. That reach makes Plane a strong operational fit for distributed teams, while the per-active-contractor billing keeps charges tied to the contractors being paid in a given month.

Administration goes beyond payouts: companies can use localized contract templates reviewed by US and local lawyers or bring their own agreements. Plane collects W-8 and W-9 forms and prepares and files 1099 forms. Contractors and employees can submit expenses for approval and reimbursement, and QuickBooks Online integration prepares and exports journal entries. That combination can reduce handoffs between HR and finance, though the accounting connection is specifically to QuickBooks Online.

Plane’s experts can advise on whether a worker should be engaged as an employee or contractor. The company also says it complies with SOC 2 Type I, GDPR and CCPA. These are useful considerations for teams handling workforce and payment data, but classification advice does not replace the company’s own decision-making.

Key features

International payments: Automated payouts across 240+ countries and 70+ currencies, without an e-wallet requirement. This is useful for globally distributed teams that want contractors to request payment and track status through Plane accounts.
Agreements and tax paperwork: Localized templates, customer-provided contracts, W-8 and W-9 collection, and 1099 preparation and filing consolidate recurring compliance work. Teams with their own legal process can keep their contracts rather than adopt Plane’s templates.
Expenses and accounting: Employee and contractor expense reports can go through approval and reimbursement, while QuickBooks Online receives prepared journal entries for export. Teams on other accounting platforms should weigh that narrower integration fit.
Developer access: An open API, CLI and MCP access, plus sandbox access on every plan, give technical teams multiple routes to evaluate or connect Plane. The sandbox inclusion is especially useful before committing to paid contractor seats.
Human support: 24/5 support for the team, including contractors, is available by email, chat and Slack, a meaningful option when payment or paperwork issues affect workers as well as administrators.

Pricing

Plane has a free HRIS Platform plan and a paid Contractors plan. Contractor billing is month-to-month at $39 /mo per person, charged only for active contractors, with no signup or cancellation fees. That active-only structure avoids paying for inactive seats, but the per-person rate can add up for teams with a large active workforce.

Plan	Price	What it includes	Best fit
HRIS Platform	$0 /mo per person	Guided hiring and onboarding with tasks, contractor and employee directory, custom reports, holidays and time tracking	Teams seeking basic people administration without paid contractor payment features
Contractors	$39 /mo per person	Payments in 240+ countries, 70+ local currencies, no e-wallet requirement, W-8 and W-9 collection, 1099 filing and health insurance availability	Teams that need contractor payments and tax administration in Plane

The free plan covers HRIS functions rather than the paid plan’s global payments and tax filing. It is a useful starting point for directory, onboarding and time tracking needs, but not a substitute for the contractor payment workflow. The Contractors plan is month-to-month rather than an annual commitment, and charges only for active contractors; the stated price is per person, so teams should account for the number active in each billing period.

Platforms

Plane is available on the web and through an API. The open API, CLI and MCP access, with sandbox access on every plan, make it a better fit for teams that expect software connections than for buyers seeking a standalone mobile app.

Who it's for

Plane suits companies paying contractors across borders that want payment, agreement, tax and expense workflows in one service, especially where QuickBooks Online and developer access matter. It is less compelling for teams that only need lightweight contractor administration, want to avoid per-person costs, or depend on accounting integrations beyond QuickBooks Online.

Pros and cons

Pro — Broad geographic coverage: Payments in 240+ countries and 70+ currencies support a widely distributed contractor base.
Pro — More than payout rails: Agreements, tax forms, expense approvals and QuickBooks Online journal entries bring several administrative steps together.
Pro — Developer pathways on every plan: API, CLI, MCP and sandbox access give technical teams options to connect and evaluate Plane.
Con — Paid contractor features start at $39 per person monthly: The active-only basis helps control charges, but the rate may be consequential for a large contractor roster.
Con — Accounting integration is focused: QuickBooks Online is the named integration, so teams built around another accounting platform may find the workflow less suitable.

Verdict

Choose Plane when international contractor payments need to sit alongside contracts, tax documents, expenses and developer access, particularly if the team already uses QuickBooks Online. The strongest reason to look elsewhere is the $39 per active person each month: Plane’s workflow breadth is valuable, but a large roster or a narrower payment need may not justify that recurring per-contractor cost.
