Overview

SteelSeries Moments is a free Windows application for capturing, editing, and sharing gameplay clips. It is best suited to players who want a single place to save highlights and prepare them for sharing. The combination of capture modes, clip tools, and audio controls is useful, but Windows-only support and game-dependent automatic clipping make it a narrower fit than a general-purpose recorder.

Key features

Players can capture with a custom hotkey or use AI clipping to save event markers automatically in supported games. Moments identifies Fortnite, Counter Strike 2, League of Legends, and Street Fighter 6. That automatic workflow is a practical advantage for players of those titles, but anyone playing other games should weigh the hotkey capture option rather than assume automatic highlights will work for them.

In-app trimming sets clip start and end points, with edits saved as new files at full video and audio quality. Multi-track audio allows separate sources to be captured and edited independently, and selected clips can be assembled into montages. Users can also export, rename, delete, filter, and favorite clips. Together, these tools cover the common highlight-preparation workflow without requiring a separate editor for basic clip work.

Clips can be uploaded to YouTube, Discord, Reddit, and Twitter (X), and the Moments community can share clips on SteelSeries Discord. Adaptive bitrate allocates more data to complex frames and less to simple ones. Users can set capture intervals and choose save locations, giving them some control over footage and disk use. The listed audio and peripheral controls also include noise reduction, equalizer, virtual surround, audio routing, app-specific and per-game profiles, game library scanning, addressable RGB control, cross-device sync, lighting profiles, and game lighting effects.

Pricing

Moments is available as a free download, and the Free plan has no listed price. That makes it a straightforward option for players who want the capture and editing workflow without a software charge. No paid plan or trial terms are established for comparison.

Platforms

Moments supports Windows 10 and later, with Windows 10 RS5+ also identified. Requirements include 8GB RAM, 2GB video RAM, and 500MB of HDD space, plus an Intel Core i5-2xxx or newer, AMD FX-4xxx or newer, NVIDIA GeForce 960+, AMD Radeon HD 7870+, or Intel HD 4000+. This is a Windows-only choice, and systems below those stated requirements are not a fit.

Who it's for

Moments suits Windows players who want replay capture, clip editing, audio handling, and sharing together, especially those playing one of its identified supported games. Its peripheral and lighting controls may also appeal to players managing compatible SteelSeries gear. It is less compelling for users who need cross-platform access or rely on automatic highlights in games outside the identified set.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free download with hotkey and multi-mode capture, in-app trimming, montages, and multiple sharing destinations makes it useful for an end-to-end highlights workflow.
Pros: Non-destructive edits retain the original video and audio quality, while multi-track audio supports separate source handling.
Pros: Capture intervals and save-location controls offer practical ways to manage clips and disk use.
Cons: The supported platform is Windows 10+, excluding players who need a macOS or Linux recorder.
Cons: Automatic event markers are limited to supported games, so they should not be a deciding factor for players of unrecognized titles.
Cons: The stated memory, storage, CPU, and GPU requirements may rule out older or lower-spec systems.

Verdict

Choose SteelSeries Moments if you play on Windows and want free gameplay capture, practical clip editing, and sharing in one application. Its most distinctive advantage is the combination of non-destructive editing, independent audio tracks, and capture controls; look elsewhere if you need another desktop platform or dependable automatic clipping across games beyond its supported set.
