Overview

PromptWizard runs a feedback loop: it generates prompt variations, scores them, critiques what worked and what did not, then refines the instructions. It can optimize examples alongside prompts, including synthesizing examples relevant to the task. That makes it more useful for measured prompt iteration than for one-off prompt drafting.

The framework covers workflows with no examples, synthetic examples, or training data. It can also generate chain-of-thought reasoning for in-context examples, with a setting to turn that off and reduce prompt size or token use. Generated prompts may be detailed, and human supervision can help tune them to the task.

Key features

Prompt and example optimization

Optimizing examples alongside instructions is a meaningful strength when model behavior depends on demonstrations. PromptWizard supports automated optimization and prompt testing, but its documented optimization runs took around 20–30 minutes on average on the supported datasets, with duration depending on the dataset. It is therefore better suited to deliberate evaluation cycles than rapid, interactive editing.

Dataset and model setup

The README names GSM8k, SVAMP, AQUARAT, and Instruction Induction (BBII) as supported datasets. Custom datasets use JSONL samples with question and answer fields, and require dataset-specific answer extraction and evaluation functions as well as configuration and data files. That flexibility is useful for teams with task-specific data, but the evaluation code is a real implementation burden.

Setup uses a Python virtual environment and installs the package from its GitHub repository in development mode. The instructions cover Windows, macOS, and Linux, and support OpenAI API keys and Azure OpenAI endpoints for model access. The project is MIT licensed; API access still requires credentials for one of those services.

Pricing

The MIT-licensed open-source software plan costs 0.00 USD per free. There are no paid plans, seats, or software quotas stated. The framework itself is free, but model access requires OpenAI or Azure OpenAI credentials, so teams should account for their model use separately. The price suits experimentation without a software subscription, while the setup and evaluation work make it less attractive to teams seeking a managed service.

Platforms

PromptWizard supports API use and self-hosted deployment, with installation instructions for Linux, macOS, and Windows. This is a practical fit for teams that want to keep the optimization workflow in their own environment; it is not presented as a hosted web application.

Who it's for

PromptWizard fits developers and research teams who want to compare prompt and example changes against task data, can configure Python projects, and have model API credentials. It is particularly relevant when a team has custom datasets and can build the answer extraction and evaluation logic. Teams that need a polished interface, turnkey integrations beyond the documented OpenAI and Azure OpenAI setup, or minimal configuration should consider a different tool.

Pros and cons

Pros

Optimizes prompts and in-context examples together, which helps when task performance depends on demonstrations.
Supports no-example, synthetic-example, and training-data workflows, giving teams several ways to begin optimization.
MIT licensing and self-hosting provide a free, configurable path for teams comfortable managing their own environment.
Reasoning generation can be disabled to reduce prompt size or token use.

Cons

Custom datasets require task-specific answer extraction and evaluation functions, plus configuration and data files.
Documented optimization runs averaged around 20–30 minutes on supported datasets, making iteration less immediate.
Python development-mode installation and external model credentials add setup work.
Generated prompts may need human supervision to suit a particular task.

Alternatives

For broader options, browse AI Prompt Generators. Choose Agenta instead if you want a freemium platform with a free tier that includes two team members, 5,000 agent runs per month, 20 evaluations per month, and one-week trace retention. Google Cloud Agent Evaluation is a paid, API and web option with a free trial and usage-based metric pricing, so consider it when that evaluation approach and hosted access fit better than a self-hosted Python framework.

Latitude offers a freemium API, self-hosted, and web option; its free Starter plan includes 20K credits per month, 30-day data retention, unlimited seats, and general-channel Slack support. PromptEval is another freemium API and web option, with a free plan capped at three web evaluations per month, ten API lints per month, five prompts, and 8,000 characters per prompt; it may suit teams focused on those bounded evaluation and linting workflows.

PromptForge has a freemium API and web plan for one user, three projects, 200 test runs per month, and 1 GB of storage. Promptic offers a freemium API and web plan with one user, one AI application, 200K credits per month, 14-day retention, and bring-your-own model keys. Promptitude is a freemium API and web option whose free plan includes two users, five prompts, two assistants, one flow, one tool, 100 generations per month, and 200 tool calls per month. PromptLayer offers a freemium API, self-hosted, and web plan with five users, 2.5k requests per month, one workspace, 250 evaluation cell executions per month, and a 10MB dataset limit.

Verdict

PromptWizard is a strong choice for technically capable teams that want a free, self-hosted way to optimize prompts and examples against real task data. Its main advantage is the feedback-driven optimization loop; its main cost is the custom evaluation and setup work needed to make that loop useful. Choose it when you can invest in that groundwork, and look elsewhere for a managed interface or faster, lower-effort iteration.
