Overview

Zed is a minimal code editor for developers who want editing, Git, debugging and AI tools in one workspace. It suits individual builders and teams choosing a cross-platform editor with flexible AI-provider options. Its breadth is a strength, but the free plan caps accepted edit predictions and Pro’s token allowance can make costs less predictable.

Key features

Editing combines multi-cursor and column editing with macro recording, language-server support, a built-in debugger and remote development. Native Git tools cover staging, committing, pulling, pushing and viewing diffs, keeping common source-control work within the editor. Hundreds of extensions add language support, themes and more. This is a substantial toolkit for a minimal editor, though teams standardized on a more specialized IDE may not need the full combination.

AI support spans Amazon Bedrock, Anthropic, GitHub Copilot, Google AI, OpenAI and others. Personal users can instead use API keys or external agents without a stated usage limit. For hosted AI, the distinction matters: Personal limits accepted edit predictions, while Pro makes predictions unlimited but includes only $5 of tokens.

Users can chat with teammates, code together, and share screens and projects. Business adds organization controls, governance, billing visibility and role-based access. Admins can restrict hosted models, disable edit predictions and lock data-sharing settings. SSO, SAML and SCIM are planned but unavailable now, a meaningful gap for organizations that require those identity controls.

Pricing

Personal: $0.00 USD per free, free forever. It includes 2,000 accepted edit predictions and unlimited use with API keys or external agents. It is the sensible starting point for individual developers who can stay within the prediction cap or bring their own AI access.
Pro: $10.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes unlimited edit predictions and $5 of tokens; usage beyond that allowance is billed at API list price plus 10%. A 14-day trial requires no card, but ends after 14 days or when its $5 balance is used. Pro fits individuals who want included predictions, but frequent hosted-model use can raise the bill above the subscription price.
Business: $30.00 USD per month. It adds organization controls, governance, billing visibility and role-based access controls. There is no minimum seat count and it is available to organizations of any size; order forms are available at 25+ seats. It is the team option when administrative controls matter, but the missing SSO, SAML and SCIM may be a blocker.

Platforms

Zed runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, making it viable for teams with mixed desktop environments.

Who it's for

Zed is a strong fit for developers seeking a capable general-purpose editor with integrated Git, debugging, remote development, collaboration and a choice of AI providers. It is less suitable for organizations that require SSO, SAML or SCIM today, or for users who need predictable hosted-AI costs beyond Pro’s included token balance.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad editing, Git, debugging and remote-development capabilities in one editor; provider choice plus API-key and external-agent support; cross-platform availability; Business has no minimum seat count.
Cons: Personal caps accepted edit predictions at 2,000; Pro usage above $5 is billed at API list price plus 10%; key identity features are not currently available.

Alternatives

Fresh is worth considering if a free editor with Linux, macOS, Windows and self-hosted availability is the priority; its free plan has no paid tiers or stated usage limits. Lapce is another free, open-source code editor for Linux, macOS and Windows. Qt Creator offers an open-source version, with Qt framework use subject to LGPL/GPL obligations. RustRover has a free non-commercial plan for learning, self-education, qualifying open-source contributions, content creation and hobby development. CodeLite is a free GPLv2 IDE for Linux, macOS and Windows, with a plugin exception allowing separately developed plugins to use any license. Evcode, Oride and Eclipse Corrosion are other free options.

Verdict

Choose Zed if you want a cross-platform editor that brings editing, Git, debugging, collaboration and flexible AI access together, especially if API keys or external agents suit your workflow. Look elsewhere if your organization needs SSO, SAML or SCIM now, or if hosted-model spending must stay within a fixed monthly amount.
