Overview

VerifyRef is a reference-checking platform for recruitment and HR teams that want automated workflows alongside resume matching and API access. Its strongest fit is teams with occasional or variable-volume checks: one-off credit packs never expire, and three free credits let new users start without a card. Teams needing mature video interviewing or a recurring, seat-based operating model should look elsewhere.

Key features

Reference workflows bring consent emails, custom questionnaires and reminders at 24 and 72 hours into one process. A credit covers one candidate and up to five references, including AI sentiment analysis and PDF or CSV exports. That per-candidate allowance makes costs predictable when reference counts vary, though heavier hiring still means buying credits. A reporting dashboard supports review, while candidate and reference IP comparison flags possible conflicts; it is a signal for follow-up, not a determination of fraud.

The talent pool parses uploaded resumes into searchable candidate profiles and matches them to job descriptions at no credit cost. This adds useful sourcing support without increasing check spend. AI-led video interviews are in beta and consume one credit per invitation, with each question recorded; teams should not treat this as a settled replacement for a dedicated interview platform.

Surveys and exit interviews cost one credit per two recipients and include AI analysis, so the same credit balance can support employee feedback as well as hiring. The REST API can create checks, retrieve results and analysis, and manage jobs and templates. The maker says any ATS can connect through REST and webhooks; one-click Merge sync is coming soon. That makes VerifyRef a plausible fit for teams willing to integrate at the API layer, rather than those expecting a ready-made one-click sync today.

The privacy policy describes encryption in transit using TLS/SSL and at rest using industry-standard encryption, along with access controls and security monitoring. The company says it does not sell personal information and names OpenAI and Google Gemini among AI service providers.

Pricing

New users get three free credits without a credit card. Paid packs are one-time purchases, not recurring subscriptions, and unused credits never expire. Since one check uses one credit, the packs map directly to candidate checks when used for reference checking; surveys, exit interviews and beta video invitations also draw on credits under their own rules.

Plan	Price and allowance	Best fit
5 Credits	33.00 USD per once; $33 billed; $6.60 per credit	Occasional use or a small initial workload
20 Credits	119.00 USD per once; $119 billed; $5.95 per credit	Teams needing a larger reserve at a lower per-credit price
50 Credits	265.00 USD per once; $265 billed; $5.30 per credit	Regular hiring workflows
100 Credits	465.00 USD per once; $465 billed; $4.65 per credit	Higher-volume use that remains within the pack size
Custom pricing	Contact us for custom pricing	Hiring at scale or more than 100 credits per month

Larger packs lower the unit cost but require more upfront spend. The free credits are a useful trial of the workflow, while teams exceeding 100 credits per month are directed to custom pricing.

Platforms

VerifyRef is available on web and through an API. Its REST API and webhooks provide an integration path for ATS systems, while the promised one-click Merge sync is not yet part of the workflow. The company is Verify Ref, a product of Datalinc PTY LTD, at Level 1, 63–73 Ann Street, Surry Hills NSW 2010, Australia.

Who it's for

Recruitment agencies, HR departments and small businesses can use VerifyRef to automate reference collection without committing to a recurring plan. Its free talent pool and variable-size credit packs particularly suit teams that want resume matching and checks together, but do not run checks at a constant high volume. Healthcare, government and nonprofit organizations are also named as audiences; teams evaluating sensitive workflows should weigh the stated privacy and security practices against their own requirements.

Pros and cons

Pros: Three no-card credits and non-expiring one-off packs lower the barrier for teams with uneven hiring demand.
Pros: One reference-check credit includes up to five references, AI analysis and exportable reports, keeping the core workflow consolidated.
Pros: Resume parsing and job matching are free, so teams can use the talent pool without spending check credits.
Cons: Video interviews remain in beta and cost a credit per invitation, making them a less dependable part of the toolkit.
Cons: ATS connections rely on REST and webhooks for now; the one-click Merge sync is still forthcoming.
Cons: Lower per-credit rates require larger upfront purchases, and custom pricing applies for hiring at scale or more than 100 credits per month.

Alternatives

Reference Check Software is the broader comparison for teams still deciding which reference-check workflow fits.

Choose Credibled if you want a free API sandbox for testing without real checks or charges; its NGO reference-check option is 4.50 CAD per once. Consider Jointl when broader applicant flows, pre-screening, assessments and data collection matter more than VerifyRef's credit-based checks; its Ultra plan is 99.00 USD per month, or $999 billed annually with 15% savings.

Referoo is another reference-check option. Xref Engage is worth considering for teams already using Xref Enterprise, which it requires. Zinc offers a pay-as-you-grow per-check model. Refapp uses usage-based pricing tailored to organizational size and hiring needs, with a quote via demo.

Choose Spark Hire if video interviewing is the priority: its Monthly plan is 299.00 USD per month, with unlimited live and one-way video interviews, up to five jobs at a time and up to five users; price varies by company size. OpusHire is another option with annual hiring-volume entitlements and pricing quoted against usage and team requirements.

Verdict

VerifyRef is a good match for recruiters and HR teams seeking automated reference checks, a free resume talent pool and API access without a subscription commitment. Its credit packs, included analysis and up-to-five-reference allowance make it most compelling for uneven or moderate usage. Look elsewhere if your workflow depends on established video interviewing, one-click ATS sync today or a different commercial model.
