Overview

Participants share unique referral links and can earn rewards when referred friends become customers. Teams can build campaigns with ReferralHero widgets or their own forms, then customise widget copy and colours. The company says its AI-powered program setup can be completed in 48 hours. JavaScript and REST APIs and webhooks provide options for custom integrations and real-time data delivery.

ReferralHero launched in 2016, and Lamar acquired it in 2021. The pricing FAQ describes AWS hosting, real-time replication to redundant databases, backups every six hours, and uptime above 99.99%. LD Innovations LLC is identified as the owner and data controller; its privacy policy describes security measures intended to prevent unauthorised access, disclosure, modification, or destruction. ReferralHero says it completed its GDPR compliance roadmap and provides EU and UK Data Processing Agreements for review and signature.

Key features

Triggered email and SMS automations, segmentation, a smart leaderboard, manual referral review, and automated coupon or access-code distribution cover campaign engagement and reward handling. Teams can offer cash, gift cards, or coupon codes, with a 90-day attribution window. That gives operators flexibility in how they reward referrals, while manual review and the platform’s fraud controls provide ways to scrutinise suspicious activity.

Fraud protection includes a real-time anti-fraud algorithm and ReCaptcha, with optional participant phone verification by SMS. PRO does not include ReCaptcha or SMS verification, so teams that need those protections must weigh the PREMIUM plan or another approach.

Analytics track attribution channels and sources, sharing channels, device, and location, alongside individual subscriber analytics and CSV exports. ReferralHero says it integrates with more than 500 external services, including Stripe, HubSpot, Salesforce, Mailchimp, Klaviyo, Shopify, and Zapier. That breadth may reduce integration work for teams already using those services; the JavaScript API, REST API, and webhooks add options for bespoke workflows.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes up to 25 subscribers, all PRO features, no credit card requirement, and ReferralHero branding. It is useful for a small proof of concept, but a 25-subscriber ceiling makes it unsuitable for an established audience or a campaign expected to grow. Branding is also a trade-off for teams seeking a fully branded participant experience.

PRO costs 199.00 USD per month and supports up to 10,000 members. It is the practical step up for teams beyond the free cap, but excludes ReCaptcha and SMS verification. PREMIUM also costs 199.00 USD per month, supports up to 50,000 subscribers, and adds priority support. Its stated risk-free period is 10 days, and the annual prepay offer saves $597 by providing three months free. At the same monthly price as PRO, PREMIUM is the stronger fit when its larger capacity or priority support matters, though the distinct limits and fraud-control exclusions should be checked against campaign needs.

Enterprise has bespoke packages with custom pricing, which suits requirements that call for an enterprise arrangement rather than the stated self-serve tiers. ReferralHero also offers a 7-day trial. Its separate PREMIUM risk-free period is 10 days; teams should distinguish those terms when evaluating a paid plan.

Platforms

ReferralHero supports web, iOS, Android, and API access. That combination accommodates teams building web campaigns and those needing mobile or programmatic integration, though the API options are the clearest route for custom product workflows.

Who it's for

ReferralHero fits growth and marketing teams that want referral, affiliate, waitlist, or contest campaigns with configurable forms, engagement automations, analytics, rewards, and a wide range of integrations. It is less compelling for teams that need a genuinely roomy free tier, or for those whose budget cannot accommodate 199.00 USD per month once they exceed 25 subscribers.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple campaign types, reward formats, and a 90-day attribution window give teams flexibility in how they run and measure referral programs.
Pros: Analytics, CSV exports, more than 500 integrations, APIs, and webhooks support both operational reporting and custom stack connections.
Pros: The free tier includes PRO features without a credit card, making a small-scale evaluation possible.
Cons: The free plan stops at 25 subscribers, so it offers little runway for campaigns that gain traction.
Cons: Both paid self-serve plans cost 199.00 USD per month; PRO also omits ReCaptcha and SMS verification despite its 10,000-member capacity.
Cons: The free plan carries ReferralHero branding, which may not suit teams that need a fully branded experience.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see the Referral Management Software and Referral Marketing Software directories.

RQ is worth considering for ICAEW member firms seeking core referral management and advanced reporting.
GrowSurf may suit teams that prefer a free affiliate-program plan with a 3% success fee rather than a monthly subscription.
RefRef is an alternative for teams prioritising unlimited programs and participants, including a self-hosted option.
Fieldified is a broader scheduling, invoicing, CRM, and reporting option for teams whose needs extend beyond referral campaigns.
PartnerPortal.io may fit teams that want a partner portal and can work within its free tier of five partners, 10 leads, 10 resources, and one team member.
Envoy by CAIOS is another option for founders and operators seeking partner directories, referral links, attribution, and trackable rewards.
Ambassador is an alternative for teams seeking referral, affiliate, partner, and employee program automation.
Partnero may suit teams looking for a paid partner-program platform with a Starter tier billed annually.

Verdict

Choose ReferralHero if your team needs configurable referral campaigns, detailed attribution, multiple reward types, and integration options across an existing stack. The free tier can support a very small evaluation, but its 25-subscriber cap is not a growth plan. At 199.00 USD per month, the paid tiers make most sense when their capacity, campaign controls, or support justify the spend; teams needing a low-cost path to scale should look elsewhere.
