Overview

Steam Input is Valve’s controller configuration system for Steam games and applications. It best suits players who want to tailor controller layouts and developers building native controller support into games. Its strongest case is the combination of player-side remapping and a free, action-based developer API; Legacy mode also reaches games that have not integrated that API, with some input conflicts to watch for.

Key features

Native actions and Legacy mode

With the Steam Input API, developers define named in-game actions and action sets, and players bind controller inputs to those actions rather than to fixed keys or buttons. Games can query the physical controls assigned to actions and show matching glyphs. This is the better fit when a game needs to handle varied controller layouts coherently.

For games without API support, Legacy mode maps physical inputs to keyboard, mouse, or gamepad inputs, without requiring developer integration. That broadens compatibility, but games that assume mouse and gamepad input will not be active together may glitch, and on-screen controller glyphs may not reflect the configured inputs. It is a practical fallback, not a substitute for native integration where accurate prompts and predictable mixed input matter.

Player configuration and sharing

The configurator is built into the Steam client and processes a device’s input according to player settings before passing it to a game or application. Players can create multiple per-game configurations, switch profiles, and share configurations publicly. The system recognizes controls such as buttons, joysticks, D-pads, triggers, trackballs, trackpads, and gyroscopes, with input modes including mouse, joystick, scroll wheel, touch menu, mouse region, and radial menu. Macro support, keyboard-and-mouse remapping, and virtual controller output add flexibility for mixed or specialized setups.

Developers can designate community configurations as official. For new titles, Valve recommends bundling Action Manifest Files with game depots rather than using Steam Workshop to manage official configurations. That guidance gives developers a clearer route for shipping their intended layouts.

Pricing

Steam Input is free, with a free plan for players and developers. Steamworks, the developer tools suite for games or software on Steam, is also described as free. The free offering includes the configurator and API without a stated seat or usage quota. This makes it a low-cost choice for Steam-focused teams, though it does not remove the work of integrating and supporting native controller actions in a game.

Platforms

Steam Input is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Players access settings through the Steam desktop client or Big Picture mode. The API supports Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers; the configurator also supports PlayStation 3 and DirectInput gamepads. Support for third-party hardware depends on whether the system supports the device.

Who it's for

Steam Input is well suited to players who want to remap supported controllers per game, share layouts, or adapt a controller for keyboard-and-mouse-oriented software. Developers targeting Steam can use the API to expose action-based controls and let players customize bindings. Valve’s guidance also encourages games to let players combine mouse, keyboard, and gamepad input, a useful consideration for teams designing flexible control schemes.

It is less compelling for teams that need native controller handling outside Steam’s supported platform ecosystem, or for games where Legacy mode’s mixed-input behavior and potentially mismatched glyphs would undermine the experience. Steam Support is the stated route for player assistance.

Pros and cons

Pro: Native action bindings separate game actions from specific buttons, helping developers support varied controller layouts.
Pro: Per-game configurations, profile switching, and public sharing give players control over their own layouts.
Pro: Legacy mode works without API integration and can translate controller input into keyboard, mouse, or gamepad input.
Pro: The system covers major controller families and several less conventional inputs and mapping modes.
Con: Legacy mode can glitch in games that do not expect simultaneous mouse and gamepad input.
Con: Legacy-mode prompts may show glyphs that do not match the player’s configured controls.
Con: The API’s value is tied to games using Steam Input’s integration, so native action behavior requires developer work.

Alternatives

For teams focused on controller remapping, compare options in the Game Controller Mapper Software and Controller Mapping Software directories. If the need is protection rather than input configuration, STOVE PC Security SDK is a paid option on API and Windows, while LIAPP has paid plans, a free trial, and broader mobile, web, API, and self-hosted platform coverage. StarForce Reader is a free option across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Other protection-oriented choices include Digital.ai Application Protection, which offers paid plans across mobile, desktop, and self-hosted deployments, and Denuvo Anti-Cheat, a paid option with a free trial for Linux and Windows. DotFix NiceProtect is a Windows-focused paid option with a free trial; its listed renewal plan is for existing customers. ProtectMyGame has a free plan, while Virbox Protector is a paid option for Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows. Verdict

Choose Steam Input if your audience plays through Steam and you want to pair adaptable player-side mappings with a native action API, without adding software cost. Its decisive limitation is that Legacy mode is only a compatibility layer: teams that need reliable glyphs and conflict-free mixed input should invest in native integration or look beyond it.
