Overview

Retool is a platform for building business apps and automations around a company’s existing data. It is best suited to developers and operational teams that need tailored internal software; its range of deployment options is a strength, while user limits and AI-credit rules deserve close attention.

Apps can be generated from a written description and refined, then connected to services such as PostgreSQL, REST APIs, Salesforce and Slack. Retool’s workflows add scheduled and webhook-driven automation, making it a more natural fit for teams building and operating their own tools than for buyers seeking a ready-made business application.

Key features

AI-assisted app building: The builder creates a working starting point from a description, which users can refine. That may accelerate initial construction, but teams still need to shape the result around their data and requirements.
Data connections: Listed integrations include REST API, Google Sheets, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Firebase, GraphQL, Snowflake, Salesforce and Slack. Retool says queries run against customers’ own data sources and it does not store their data, a useful approach for teams that want tools connected to systems they already use.
Mobile apps: Retool supports native iOS and Android apps as well as progressive web apps. Mobile apps can use device capabilities including photo capture, barcode scanning, signatures and NFC reading, making the mobile option relevant to field and operational work.
Workflow automation: Workflows support scheduled and webhook triggers, custom error handling and automatic retries. Those controls suit recurring or event-driven processes that need some resilience when a run fails.
Security and deployment: Role-based access controls, audit logging, SSO and independent workspaces address team governance needs. Teams can use Retool in the cloud or self-host it in their own VPC, with Docker-based setup; that choice offers infrastructure control, but self-hosting also means taking on deployment responsibilities.
AI usage: AI credits are pooled across the account, renew monthly and do not roll over; paid plans can add credit packs. AI agents are billed hourly outside that pool, so teams should account for agent usage separately from credits.

Pricing

Retool uses a freemium model, with a free plan and paid plans beginning at $10/mo (annual). The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and supports up to five users. That is a practical way for a small team to start, but the user cap makes it a poor long-term fit for a broader rollout.

Team is 10.00 USD per month, billed at $10/mo per builder and $5/mo per internal user. It includes 5,000 workflow runs/month, a staging resource environment, app release versions, 1,000 AI credits/month and additional agent hours available. This is the entry point for teams that need more than five users and core release and workflow capacity; the pooled monthly credits do not carry over.

Business is 50.00 USD per month, billed at $50/mo per builder and $15/mo per internal user. It adds audit logging, rich permission controls, portals and embedded apps, unlimited resource environments, unlimited modules and 3,000 AI credits/month. The higher per-user rates are more defensible for teams that need the added governance and distribution options than for small projects that can work within Team’s narrower feature set.

Enterprise has custom pricing and includes technical support from Retool’s Support Engineering team. Retool offers a free trial, but no trial duration is stated.

Platforms

Retool supports web, iOS and Android, offers an API, and can be self-hosted as well as used in the cloud. It also supports database and backend capabilities, custom domains and both deployment options. This breadth is useful for teams choosing how to build and run internal software, though the choice between cloud and self-hosting brings different operational responsibilities.

Who it's for

Retool identifies developers, business engineers, analysts and operations teams as builders. It is a strong fit for organizations that have business data in existing systems and want custom web, mobile or automated workflows around it. Teams that need a small, fixed user group can start on Free; those expecting broader internal use should budget for Team or Business. It is less suited to buyers who want a finished app without building and maintaining a tailored solution.

Pros and cons

Pro: App building, mobile support and workflow automation sit alongside connections to common business data sources, enabling teams to shape several kinds of internal tools within one platform.
Pro: Cloud and customer-VPC self-hosting options let teams choose their deployment approach, with listed controls such as SSO, access roles and audit logging.
Con: Free is capped at five users, so even modest adoption beyond a small team requires a paid plan.
Con: AI credits renew monthly without rollover, and agent hours are billed separately; teams with variable usage need to plan for both.
Con: Business raises per-builder and per-internal-user pricing substantially over Team, so its governance and embedding features need to justify the step up.

Alternatives

ToolJet is worth comparing for a small team seeking a free cloud tier: its Free plan lists two builders, 50 end users, two apps and 100 AI credits/month.
Draftbit is an option to compare for mobile-oriented app building; its Free plan includes one sandbox, three projects, two apps per project, one REST API integration per project and 5,000 one-time credits.
Budibase is another freemium option; its Pro plan lists 2K Budibase AI credits, one creator, one workspace and synchronous automations for 19.00 USD per month.
AgilePoint NX offers a Community Edition with 25 named users and two applications.
Jet Admin has a free plan with 1 GB storage and a Pro plan priced at 20.00 USD per month monthly or 16.00 USD/month yearly.
Google AppSheet is an alternative with a Starter plan at 5.00 USD per month per user, including five AppSheet databases and 2,500 rows per database.
Base44 offers a free tier with 25 message credits/mo, 100 integration credits/mo, up to five apps, authentication, database functionality and analytics.
Ragic is another freemium alternative.

Verdict

Choose Retool if your developers or operations team needs custom tools and automations connected to business data, especially when mobile support or self-hosting matters. Its main advantage is the combination of app building, workflows and deployment choice; look elsewhere if five free users are not enough and paid per-user costs or monthly AI-credit limits do not fit your rollout.
