Overview

Rolldown is designed to power Vite 8 and later, bringing a Rollup-compatible API to a Rust-based bundler. Most application teams should use it through Vite rather than treating it as a standalone replacement in their build stack.

The project is free and open source under the MIT license. VoidZero Inc. holds its copyrights, funds development and controls its direction. An online REPL offers a way to explore the tool in a browser, and the project links to GitHub, Discord and contribution resources.

Key features

Its plugin API is identical to Rollup’s, allowing most existing Rollup plugins to be reused. That is a practical advantage for teams already invested in Rollup-based tooling, though it is not a guarantee that every plugin will work unchanged. Community plugins published to npm are listed in the Vite Plugin Registry.

Built-in TypeScript, JSX and syntax-lowering transforms are powered by Oxc, reducing the need to assemble separate transform plugins for common compilation tasks. Rolldown also includes module resolution, ESM/CommonJS interoperability, define and inject options, minification, tree shaking and source maps. Mixed ESM and CommonJS module graphs do not require @rollup/plugin-commonjs.

Configurable manual code splitting gives teams control over chunk organization. Module types remain experimental, making them a poor foundation for production-critical workflows that depend on a stable interface. JavaScript APIs support bundling and watching, but the build() API is experimental and may change in patch releases; teams automating builds directly against it should account for that maintenance risk.

Install commands are provided for npm, pnpm, yarn, bun and vp. Prebuilt binaries cover Linux, Windows and Apple platforms, with Android and other targets also documented. Where no prebuilt binary is distributed, the Wasm build or building from source are alternatives. Windows file-system access can slow builds, particularly when transforms run without plugins.

A security caveat also matters: direct eval can let bundled code access variables from other files, potentially exposing sensitive values in those variables.

Pricing

Free & open source: 0.00 USD per free. The plan is free and open source, with MIT licensing and no paid plans stated. That makes it a practical option for teams that want a bundler without a software fee; there are no paid tiers to weigh against feature limits.

Platforms

Rolldown is listed for Android, API, Linux, macOS, web and Windows. Prebuilt binaries are available for Linux, Windows and Apple macOS architectures, while additional experimental and other targets are documented. Teams on platforms without a distributed binary can use Wasm or build from source.

Who it's for

Application teams adopting Vite are the clearest fit, since Rolldown is intended as Vite’s unified bundler. Teams with existing Rollup plugins also have a credible migration path through API compatibility. For library authors, the project points to tsdown instead. Direct users should be comfortable tracking experimental APIs and module types rather than assuming every interface is settled.

Pros and cons

Pro: Rollup-compatible plugin APIs let teams reuse most of their existing Rollup plugins, limiting disruption to established build setups.
Pro: Built-in TypeScript, JSX and syntax lowering, alongside mixed ESM/CommonJS support, cover common bundling needs without requiring separate transform or interop plugins.
Pro: Free, MIT-licensed software avoids a paid-plan decision for teams evaluating it.
Con: Experimental module types and the patch-changeable build() API create risk for production workflows that rely on those interfaces.
Con: Windows file-system access can slow builds, particularly when transforms run without plugins.

Alternatives

JavaScript Build Tools is the broader category for teams comparing options. Consider these alternatives when their stated characteristics better match the stack:

SWC is another free, open-source Rust-based developer toolchain; consider it when that toolchain is a better fit than Rolldown’s bundling focus.
esbuild is free MIT-licensed software with native executable and WebAssembly versions; its Wasm option may suit teams seeking that deployment form.
webpack is free, MIT-licensed, self-managed software; choose it when self-managed software is the priority.
Parcel is a free open-source project supported by code and financial contributions from companies and individuals; consider it if that community-backed model suits your project.
Rollup is a free alternative for teams that prefer using Rollup itself.
Google Closure Compiler is a free open-source Java application, Bazel library and npm package; consider it when one of those forms fits your tooling.
Oxc is free and open source and may suit teams considering that tool directly.
Rspack is free and MIT-licensed; consider it when that alternative better fits your build stack.

Verdict

Choose Rolldown through Vite if you want a free, Rollup-compatible bundler with common transforms built in. Its plugin reuse and mixed-module support are strong reasons to consider it, but teams needing settled direct-build interfaces or experimental module types should look elsewhere or use the recommended Vite route.
