Overview

SendSafely is a secure transfer service for sensitive files and messages, best suited to teams that need controlled sharing inside existing business workflows. Its strongest case is the combination of device-side encryption, recipient verification and integrations; small monthly allowances on lower tiers make it a poor fit for routine high-volume transfers.

Key features

Encryption and recipient access

Files are encrypted on the sender’s device with OpenPGP and AES-256. A split-key design keeps SendSafely from decrypting their contents, a meaningful safeguard for organizations transferring information they should not expose to their provider. Recipients can open files in a modern browser without an account, after entering a one-time passcode sent by email or SMS. That keeps external sharing relatively direct while retaining an identity check.

Control over shared files

Senders can set custom expiry dates, revoke access, limit views or downloads, and enable view-only mode or watermarking. Password protection, recipient verification, audit logs and admin controls add further oversight. These controls suit sensitive transfers where access needs to be constrained or reviewed; they are more machinery than ordinary, low-risk file sharing requires.

Integrations and developer access

Native integrations cover Outlook, Gmail, Slack, Salesforce, Zendesk, Freshdesk and Intercom, giving teams several ways to bring protected transfers into tools they already use. The REST API and client libraries for Python, Java, .NET and Node.js support custom workflows, but API access starts at Business. That makes the developer route a substantial plan commitment rather than an option for Personal, Basic or Pro users.

AI workflows, compliance and hosting

HALO collects files in AI chatbot workflows with client-side encryption, but it is an Enterprise feature. SendSafely supports SOC 2 Type 2, PCI DSS, GDPR and CCPA, and HIPAA business associate agreements are available on Enterprise plans. The service runs on AWS; Business and Enterprise customers can choose regional hosting in the United States, European Union or Australia. These provisions make it more relevant to regulated teams, though HIPAA coverage requires the top tier.

Pricing

SendSafely is freemium, with a free plan, a 14-day trial and paid plans from $10/mo. Trial users are limited to 2 GB of uploads, so the trial is not an unrestricted way to evaluate sustained high-volume use.

Personal: Price not listed; 50 MB per month. This is a narrow allowance for occasional, small transfers, not ongoing team use.
Basic: 10.00 USD per month for 250 MB/month, expiration controls, a personal upload URL and the Outlook plug-in. It suits modest Outlook-centric sharing, but the small quota rules it out for regular large files.
Pro: 20.00 USD per month for 100 GB/month and files up to 10 GB, plus expiration controls, a personal upload URL and the Outlook plug-in. The jump in capacity makes this more practical for an individual with substantial transfer needs, while the feature set remains focused on the listed Outlook workflow.
Team: 120.00 USD per month, billed annually; 5 users, 10 GB bandwidth/month and 200 packages/month, with a stated 5–25 user range. It brings team capacity and support, but the listed five-user allowance and bandwidth quota deserve close scrutiny before committing.
Business: 232.00 USD per month, billed annually; 8 users, 30 GB bandwidth/month and 500 packages/month, with an 8–50 user range. This is the entry point for API access and regional hosting, so it is the practical tier for teams that need those capabilities, despite the annual term.
Enterprise: Price not listed; 100 GB bandwidth per month and 1,000 packages per month. It is required for HALO and HIPAA BAAs; premium 24x7 support with named contacts and guaranteed SLAs can be added.
Consumption — Bandwidth: Custom pricing per GB transferred, with volume-based tiers and no seat licensing. This can suit usage-led deployments that do not want seat-based pricing.
Consumption — Packages: Custom pricing per package, with volume-based tiers. It is the metered alternative for buyers who prefer package-based charges.

Team pricing includes online support. The Personal allowance and trial upload cap are the key constraints to weigh early; teams needing API access, regional hosting or HIPAA BAAs must budget for higher tiers.

Platforms

SendSafely supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows and web, alongside an API and extension. That mix spans desktop, mobile and browser-based workflows, with API integration reserved for Business and higher.

Who it's for

SendSafely is a strong fit for teams that regularly exchange sensitive information with external recipients and need verification, revocation or auditability without requiring recipients to create accounts. Its integrations and higher-tier compliance and hosting options also suit organizations embedding transfer into established business tools. Occasional users with small transfers may find Personal sufficient; teams moving larger volumes should compare the quotas and annual commitments against their actual workload.

Pros and cons

Pros: Device-side OpenPGP and AES-256 encryption with split keys means the provider cannot decrypt file contents.
Pros: One-time passcodes let recipients access transfers without a SendSafely account, balancing external-user convenience with verification.
Pros: Expiry, revocation, view/download limits, view-only mode and watermarking give senders unusually direct control over shared content.
Pros: Native integrations span email, collaboration and customer-service tools, with an API and client libraries for custom workflows on Business and above.
Cons: Personal is capped at 50 MB per month, and Basic at 250 MB/month, limiting their usefulness for recurring or large transfers.
Cons: API access and regional hosting begin at Business, while HALO and HIPAA BAAs require Enterprise, putting important capabilities behind higher-tier pricing.
Cons: Team and Business are billed annually, and their stated monthly bandwidth and package quotas may constrain some teams.

Globalscape EFT is an alternative for teams comparing paid, self-hosted transfer products with FTP over SSL/TLS, HTTPS and a web client.
SFTPGo may suit teams seeking a freemium, self-hosted option; its Tiny plan is 50.00 EUR per month with 25 GiB storage and 250 GiB monthly transfer.
IBM Sterling Secure File Transfer is another paid option, with REST APIs and transfer visibility and monitoring in its Essentials plan.
Files.com is a paid alternative with a free trial; its Starter plan is 199.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes 10 Full Users, 50 System Users, two outbound connections and 1 TB monthly storage.
WeTransfer may be a better match for simpler transfer needs: its free tier allows 10 transfers, 3 GB total and three-day link expiry.
TransferNow offers a free tier with 5 GB per transfer and seven-day availability, a straightforward option for smaller transfers.

Verdict

Choose SendSafely if your team needs encrypted transfers with verified recipients, controlled access and integrations into business tools it already runs. The device-side encryption and sharing controls are compelling for sensitive exchanges, but the small lower-tier quotas and Business-or-higher gate for API access make it less attractive for high-volume or developer-led use on a tight budget.
