Overview

sfizz plays existing SFZ instrument libraries and lets users build their own. Its support for SFZv1 makes it a practical option for workflows based on that format; partial SFZv2 compatibility can leave instruments that use newer features incompletely supported.

The project is hobbyist-driven, and use requires no financial return. Optional donations are accepted through Open Collective. The GitHub repository was archived on June 21, 2026 and is read-only, so teams seeking an actively maintained project should weigh that status carefully.

Key features

Plugin and standalone operation: VST3i, Audio Unit and LV2 plugins suit workstation workflows, while the standalone JACK client gives advanced users an option outside a plugin host.
Instrument editing with hot reload: Makers can revise a custom instrument and test changes without manually interacting with the software between edits, helping keep iteration focused.
On-demand streaming: Sounds load when needed, and memory for sounds no longer in use is reclaimed dynamically. This is useful when working with libraries where loading every sound at once would be wasteful.
Sample and playback support: sfizz supports sample mapping and round-robin playback, with WAV, FLAC and WavPack listed as sample formats.
Developer integration: The engine takes an SFZ file and MIDI-type events, then renders audio through successive callback calls. C and C++ API bindings allow integration into another program; the project also cites LV2 hosts such as Carla and Ardour.

Pricing

sfizz — 0.00 USD per free. Use requires no financial return, and donations are optional. There is no free trial because the software is free. This suits musicians and developers who want an SFZ engine without a purchase cost, though the hobbyist-driven project and archived repository are relevant trade-offs for teams that need ongoing development.

Platforms

The project lists Linux, macOS, Windows and API use. Downloads include Linux packages, Windows 32-bit and 64-bit installers, and a universal macOS package for Intel and Apple Silicon. The download page lists version 1.2.3, released January 14, 2024. Linux plugin users should note that the file requester depends on zenity; without it, selecting an SFZ or Scala file may do nothing.

Plugin support covers VST3i, Audio Unit and LV2, and advanced users can run the standalone JACK client. Developers can also embed the library through its C and C++ bindings.

Who it's for

sfizz is best suited to musicians working with SFZv1 libraries, instrument makers who value hot reload, and developers who want to render SFZ instruments from a C or C++ program. It is a weaker fit for users whose libraries rely on SFZv2 features or teams that prioritize an active, writable upstream project.

Pros and cons

Pro: VST3i, Audio Unit, LV2, standalone JACK and library integration give users several ways to fit sfizz into a music or software workflow.
Pro: On-demand streaming and dynamic memory reclamation avoid keeping unused sounds resident.
Pro: Free use and optional donations remove a purchase requirement.
Con: Partial SFZv2 compatibility limits confidence with instruments that depend on newer format features.
Con: The archived, read-only repository is a concern for users who need an actively maintained project.
Con: Linux plugin file selection may fail without zenity.

Alternatives

For a wider sampler shortlist, see Sampler Software.

LinuxSampler is another free option for Linux, macOS, Windows and self-hosted use. Its GNU GPL terms require prior written permission for commercial hardware or software use, a key consideration for commercial integrators.
Vaporizer 2 is a free, GPL-3.0 alternative with standalone and plugin formats on macOS, Linux and Windows.
Decent Sampler is free and plays libraries in its own DecentSampler formats, .dspreset and .dslibrary; choose it when those formats match the library you need.
TX16Wx Software Sampler offers a free sampler plugin and a trial, with an unrestricted licence also available.
MASCHINE is a paid option for macOS and Windows, with plans that include a Maschine 3 update or Maschine Central.
Waves Curves AQ is a paid macOS and Windows option included in Waves Ultimate monthly or annual subscriptions.
Atlas 2 is a paid sampler for Linux, macOS and Windows, with a one-time full-version purchase and installation on three machines.
Falcon is a paid macOS and Windows option available through SonicPass, which includes access to instruments and effects.

Verdict

Choose sfizz if you want a free SFZv1 sampler that can run as a plugin, JACK client or embedded library, especially when hot reload and on-demand streaming suit your workflow. Look elsewhere if your instruments depend on full SFZv2 support or your team needs an actively maintained upstream project.
