Overview

SnapXam is a math-learning service for students who want worked explanations and teachers who need to prepare practice materials. It also offers a math-recognition and solving API for teams building education or research tools. Its combination of student help, teacher resources and pay-per-use API makes it a flexible fit, but not a choice for offline work.

Key features

Students can type a problem or photograph it, including handwritten math, to get an answer with step-by-step explanations. This is useful when transcribing a formula would be cumbersome, and the range of solved examples—from arithmetic and algebra to differential equations—gives learners room to explore beyond basic calculations. Free step-by-step examples and sign-up access make it possible to start without a subscription.

The AI whiteboard provides another route for practicing math. Users can save favorite solutions and earn credits toward complete step-by-step solutions. Premium adds unlimited solutions, downloads and discounts, which matter most to regular users; occasional learners can begin with the free access, but should not assume it removes solving limits.

Teachers can generate customizable worksheets and tests from thousands of exercises, then download, print or share them. That makes SnapXam more than a student solver, although teams that need a specific learning-management integration should assess the API against their own requirements.

The REST API returns JSON and separates image recognition from expression operations. Recognize extracts LaTeX or structured notation from printed and handwritten math images; Solve, Simplify and Factor handle math expressions. The per-image and per-request prices make usage costs legible for small integrations, while the $10 in free API credits gives developers a low-cost way to begin.

Pricing

SnapXam uses a freemium model with a free plan and Premium for students. Premium is an ongoing subscription; fees are non-refundable unless the law requires otherwise, and cancellation is available from the account page. Since no Premium price is provided, it is best judged by its stated benefits—unlimited solutions, downloads and discounts—rather than assumed affordability. The free plan suits learners exploring the service, while frequent solvers are the clearest candidates for Premium.

API pricing is usage-based: Recognize costs $0.0025 per image, Solve costs $0.004 per request, and Simplify and Factor each cost $0.003 per request. New API keys receive $10 in free credits. The published one-time API plan entries show 0.00 USD per once for Solve API, Factor API, Recognize API and Simplify API; these entries describe the operations, while the listed per-use rates give a concrete basis for estimating ongoing use.

Platforms

SnapXam supports web, Android and iOS, as well as API access. It has no offline mode, so learners and teams that need solving without a connection should choose another tool.

Who it's for

SnapXam is strongest for students who benefit from explanations rather than just answers, teachers preparing reusable worksheets, and developers who need math OCR or solving endpoints. It is less suitable for offline study or for anyone who needs a clearly priced Premium subscription before deciding.

Privacy-conscious users should note that SnapXam collects account screen names, email addresses and submitted content, including images and math problems. It says it does not sell or trade personal information and may share it with trusted service providers. Users must be at least 13; the service says it does not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13 or the applicable local age.

Pros and cons

Pros: Typed and photo input with handwriting support avoids manual transcription of many problems.
Pros: Broad subject coverage and step-by-step explanations serve learners beyond basic arithmetic.
Pros: Worksheet creation and a JSON API extend the product to teachers and software teams.
Cons: No offline mode rules it out for disconnected study or deployments.
Cons: Premium is ongoing and non-refundable except where required by law, so users should review the subscription before committing.

Alternatives

For a broader platform footprint, consider MathPad, which supports desktop systems and offers a free tier with 10 daily credits and three AI Tutor trial messages per day.

Photomath is worth comparing for mobile-first use: its free Basic tier includes step-by-step explanations, while custom visual aids and extra how-and-why tips are excluded. Cymath offers free step-by-step solutions on Android, iOS and web, with a $5.00 USD per month Plus plan that adds ad-free use and more detailed sub-steps on most problems.

Maple Calculator may suit someone who wants a free calculator app and can work within its limit of five step-by-step solutions per week. MathBuddy offers free access with a daily question limit, making it another option for occasional questions. Mathos AI (MathGPTPro) provides a free tier with limited video generation and image input alongside flashcards, quizzes and auto-drawn graphs. Mathway is a free solver and calculator option with step-by-step solutions; its optional subscription unlocks additional access.

Verdict

Choose SnapXam if students need worked explanations, teachers need customizable worksheets, or a team wants a math OCR and solving API with clear per-use rates. Its breadth across learners, educators and developers is the main reason to choose it. Look elsewhere if offline use is essential or if a clearly priced Premium commitment is a prerequisite.
