Overview

Wren’s MDL context layer captures metrics, relationships, calculations, and approved data, with version control for the model. That gives teams a shared basis for analysis rather than relying on each user or agent to interpret the data independently. The benefit is consistency; the cost is the work of defining and maintaining that context, which may be excessive for teams with occasional, low-stakes questions.

The agent can plan multi-step analysis, query data, build charts, and use reusable Skills, shared Knowledge, and private, project-scoped Memory. Users can describe dashboards, reports, or custom views in plain English, refine them conversationally, and save them as reusable Artifacts. This breadth makes Wren more than a SQL-generation tool, but teams seeking only one-off query assistance may not need its wider workflow.

Key features

Connections and agent access

Wren connects to Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Redshift, PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, ClickHouse, Trino, Starburst, Athena, and CSV. The range covers major warehouses, databases, and file-based input, giving teams several routes into existing data. Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, and compatible MCP clients can call Wren as a sub-agent, extending the modeled context to tools teams already use.

Query explanations, query optimization, and schema context support understanding and shaping data questions. White-label embedding through Threads, APIs, or MCP, including an iframe interface and APIs for custom experiences, gives teams options for putting Wren-powered analysis into their own applications.

Governance and deployment

Security features include OIDC identity, project isolation, query-time row- or column-level controls where supported, and audit logs for SQL and activity. The Cloud service is labeled SOC 2; its default region is GCP us-east-4, with other regions available on request. These controls and deployment flexibility suit teams with defined governance needs, although the strongest row- and column-level controls are reserved for Enterprise Cloud.

Deployments include managed cloud, private cloud, self-hosted, and fully air-gapped options. Wren AI OSS is a free, open-source context engine for individual developers, used through CLI and MCP without a UI. That is a useful route for developers who want the context engine rather than a complete visual product, but it is not a substitute for the web experience.

Pricing

The Free plan has 20 monthly credits, two projects, two members, and a limit of 10 tables per project. Credits expire at month end and do not roll over. All plans also receive 80 credits for the first 14 days, followed by the applicable monthly allowance. The small project, member, and table caps make Free better for evaluation than for a team rollout.

Essential Cloud costs 179.00 USD per month, billed annually. It includes 13,200 annual credits, additional credits at $0.1 each, and unlimited projects and members. This removes the Free plan’s project and member ceilings, making it the more practical paid starting point for teams that can budget annually and do not require the higher tier’s controls.

Enterprise Cloud costs 559.00 USD per month, billed annually, and includes 24,000 annual credits, extra credits at $0.1 each, row- and column-level data control, MCP, and unlimited integrations. It is the fit for organizations that need those controls or broad agent connectivity; the higher annual commitment is hard to justify if those requirements do not apply. Enterprise Plus has custom pricing under an annual contract, is licensed by concurrent sessions, and supports self-hosted, on-premise, or air-gapped deployment.

The pricing FAQ says support is through email tickets in the support portal during business hours. That channel and schedule are worth weighing for teams that need support outside business hours. Wren’s stated pricing model is freemium, with a 14-day trial and paid plans from 179.00 USD per month billed annually.

Platforms

Wren AI is available as a web product, API, and self-hosted deployment. Managed and private cloud options sit alongside self-hosted and air-gapped deployments, so teams can choose between operating the service themselves and using cloud hosting. The OSS edition’s CLI and MCP access comes without a UI.

Who it's for

Wren is a strong fit for teams that need governed definitions shared across analysts and AI clients, want to turn questions into reusable dashboards or reports, or must choose among cloud, self-hosted, and air-gapped deployment. It is less compelling for a small team that needs only occasional SQL help: Free is constrained by credits and project limits, while the paid entry plan requires annual billing.

Pros and cons

Pros: A version-controlled context layer brings metrics, relationships, calculations, and approved data into a shared model, helping keep analysis aligned across users and agents.
Pros: Broad database connections, MCP access, and embedding options support use in existing data stacks and custom applications.
Pros: Cloud, private cloud, self-hosted, and air-gapped deployment options address different infrastructure and isolation needs.
Cons: Free is limited to two projects, two members, and 10 tables per project, and unused monthly credits expire.
Cons: Essential Cloud starts at 179.00 USD per month billed annually, and the more advanced data controls require Enterprise Cloud at 559.00 USD per month billed annually.
Cons: OSS has no UI, and support through email tickets is limited to business hours.

Alternatives

Consider Florentine.ai if a free plan with a database cap, monthly request allowance, and MCP Server and API access better matches a smaller setup. Outerbase AI is another freemium option, with its free tier capped at five users, one base, and 10 EZQL queries per month; it also supports desktop and self-hosted platforms. Choose Kyligence if you want a paid platform with a free trial.

AI for Database may suit buyers looking for a freemium, self-hosted option whose Pro plan is 20.00 USD per month billed monthly, with unlimited workflows and credits that do not expire. Snowflake Feature Store is a paid, consumption-based option for teams focused on Snowflake’s core platform functionality, Snowpark, data sharing, optimized storage, and Time Travel. Vanna AI offers a freemium route with an Explorer plan at 50.00 USD per month for 20 questions per day, admin features, API access, and same-day email support.

AskYourDatabase is a paid alternative with a 49.00 USD per month Desktop Ultimate plan billed monthly per seat, while BlazeSQL is a paid option whose Pro plan costs 150.00 USD per month and includes graphs, dashboards, a desktop private database connection, and a knowledge base. Verdict

Choose Wren AI if your team needs governed data context shared by people and AI agents, with deployment choices that can extend to self-hosted or air-gapped environments. The main reason to choose it is the combination of modeled context, multi-step analysis, and flexible integration. Look elsewhere if a lightweight query assistant is enough: the Free plan is tightly capped, and the first paid tier starts at 179.00 USD per month on annual billing.
