Overview

Time can be recorded with a live timer, a drag-and-drop calendar, or a weekly timesheet, then organized by client, project, task, and tag. Project rates and budgets make it practical to track billable work rather than just elapsed time, though the lack of timesheet approvals leaves teams without a formal review step.

The desktop app detects the active app and document and pauses a timer when it detects idle time. That activity stays on the device until turned into a time entry, which offers context without automatically making activity part of a timesheet.

Key features

Reporting and invoicing

Reports can be filtered and grouped by member, project, client, task, tag, or billable state, then shared or exported as PDF, CSV, or Excel. Invoices draw on billable time and support PDF and structured e-invoice output, tax rates, discounts, and EU reverse-charge. This makes solidtime more useful for client billing than a tracker that stops at recording hours.

Self-hosting and data handling

Solidtime is available under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0, with a free open-source self-hosted option and paid on-premise licenses. Its cloud service is hosted within the EEA, primarily in France with Scaleway. The DPA describes TLS encryption in transit, role-based access, logged data changes, logically separated customer data, and encrypted offsite backups. Card payments for paid plans are handled by Paddle as Merchant of Record; solidtime says it does not receive or store card details.

Imports

The GitHub project README lists time-data imports from Toggl, Clockify, and Timeentry CSV. That gives teams using those sources a route to bring time data across, though the listed imports do not establish broader migration coverage.

Pricing

Solidtime has a free plan and paid cloud pricing from €8/user/mo on annual billing. Prices below exclude VAT where stated.

Plan	Price	What it means
Open Source	€0.00 per free	All core features and self-hosted deployment, suited to teams able to operate their own instance.
Solo	Custom pricing	For one user; the cloud pricing page describes it for freelancers.
Professional, annual billing	€8.00 per month per user, billed annually	Everything in Solo, plus team support, access management, billable hours and rates, invoicing, estimates, rounding, PDF and shareable reports, and priority support. This is the clearest fit for teams billing clients.
Professional, monthly billing	€9.00 per month per user, billed monthly	The same Professional features with monthly billing, at a higher monthly price than the annual option.
Business	€199.00 per year	Self-hosted deployment for one organization and five users. The comparison also gives a starting price of €49 / year, with team size determining price.
Enterprise	Custom pricing	Self-hosted core features and invoicing, plus a private Docker Registry and priority support.

The free Open Source plan avoids a subscription but requires self-hosting. Professional adds team controls and client-billing tools, while Business sets a five-user, one-organization scope; teams outside that scope should check the team-size-based pricing. Priority support is included with Professional cloud and Enterprise on-premise, but not with Open Source or Business.

Platforms

Solidtime supports web, API, Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted deployment. The desktop app is offered for macOS, Windows 10/11, and Linux, with Apple Silicon and Intel macOS builds and x64 and ARM options listed. The app's local activity handling may appeal to users who want context to remain on-device until they create a time entry.

Who it's for

Freelancers and client-billing teams are the natural audience: they can organize work by client and project, set rates and budgets, review billable reports, and generate invoices. Teams that need access controls, estimates, and richer reporting have a stated reason to consider Professional. Solidtime is a weaker fit for organizations whose workflow depends on timesheet approvals.

Pros and cons

Pro: Time, reports, and invoicing connect in one workflow, including structured e-invoice output and EU reverse-charge for client billing.
Pro: The free AGPLv3 self-hosted option gives teams a way to run core features themselves.
Pro: Activity detection stays on the device until made into a time entry.
Con: Timesheet approvals are not included, a notable gap for teams with formal sign-off requirements.
Con: Professional costs €8.00 per month per user on annual billing or €9.00 per month per user monthly, so teams should weigh the annual commitment against the monthly option.
Con: Business is scoped to five users and one organization at its stated €199.00 per year plan; larger teams need to account for team-size-based pricing.

Verdict

Solidtime is a strong choice for freelancers and teams that need project time to flow into client reports and invoices, especially if self-hosting or local activity handling matters. Look elsewhere if approval workflows are essential, or compare the monthly and annual Professional terms carefully before committing per user.
