Overview

Starburst turns datasets into Data Products that combine business definitions, ownership, access policies, and lineage. A shared catalog makes those products discoverable, while JDBC and REST connect them to BI tools, APIs, AI agents, and apps. The combination is useful when many teams need consistent, governed access rather than separate interpretations of raw tables.

More than 50 sources are supported, including Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, Hive, Amazon S3, Snowflake, and PostgreSQL. That breadth can help unify varied data estates, but the value depends on an organization being ready to manage products and policies as part of its data practice.

Key features

Governed, versioned data products

RBAC, column masking, and row-level security let teams share data while limiting access. Products are tested and versioned, with breaking changes reviewed before rollout. Teams can define products in YAML, commit them to git, test before merge, and roll back when needed. This makes the platform a stronger fit for controlled change processes than for teams that simply want an ad hoc catalog.

CI/CD lineage checks validate upstream freshness before a new version is published. That helps catch stale dependencies in release workflows, while the semantic layer maps raw data to business-ready metrics, dimensions, and relationships for both tools and AI agents.

Deployment, security, and AI

Private cloud, hybrid, and on-premises deployment, including air-gap readiness, suit organizations that cannot move data into a standard public-cloud setup. Security integrations and controls include column- and row-level RBAC and ABAC, Apache Ranger, HashiCorp Vault, Okta, LDAP, dynamic masking, column-level encryption, and unified audit logging. This is a substantial governance toolkit, though its breadth is most relevant to teams with real compliance or access-control requirements.

AIDA adds plain-language querying, an Agentic Control Plane, full-text search over Iceberg tables, and built-in AI tasks. Its token usage is billed separately on Enterprise and Mission-Critical, so AI consumption adds a cost beyond those plans' credit rates.

Pricing

The pricing model is freemium, with a free plan, paid plans from $0.50, and a 30-day trial. Paid rates are quoted per credit; AIDA token usage is separately billed on the top two tiers. The per-credit basis makes usage worth evaluating against expected workloads rather than comparing rates alone.

Free — 0.00 USD, free forever: up to 3 clusters and standard cluster execution for ad hoc queries. It provides a no-cost way to start, but its stated scope is limited to ad hoc use and three clusters.
Pro — 0.50 USD per credit: flexible cluster execution modes, streaming ingest, and advanced cluster management. It suits teams that need more operational flexibility without the higher-tier governance and integration options.
Enterprise — 0.75 USD per credit: advanced autoscaling, ABAC and SCIM, AWS PrivateLink, and Private Preview access. It is the clearer fit for organizations needing stronger access management and private connectivity; AIDA tokens cost extra.
Mission-Critical — 1.00 USD per credit: elite support and ticketing, advanced governance integrations, lakehouse security and compliance tools, and the highest uptime guarantees. It targets workloads where support and operational assurance justify the higher rate; AIDA tokens are also billed separately.

Starburst advertises 24×7 enterprise support. The plan distinctions make the lower tiers more suitable for evaluation or less demanding deployments, while regulated and high-availability workloads have a stronger case for Enterprise or Mission-Critical.

Platforms

The platform is available through API, self-hosted deployment, and web. Hybrid deployment, private cloud, on-premises operation, and air-gap readiness give infrastructure teams meaningful placement options, particularly where data residency or network isolation matters.

Who it's for

Financial services, healthcare, insurance, and government teams are the clearest audience, especially when they need governed data sharing, auditable access, and controlled releases. It also fits data platform teams serving BI, APIs, apps, and AI consumers from a common semantic foundation. Smaller teams that only need shared metrics or a simple query interface may be better served by a narrower product.

Pros and cons

Pro: Data Products combine definitions, policy, ownership, and lineage, giving teams a governed unit to publish and reuse.
Pro: Versioning, review of breaking changes, YAML-in-git workflows, and freshness checks support disciplined releases.
Pro: Broad deployment choices and security controls accommodate regulated or isolated environments.
Con: Paid plans are credit-based, so the headline rate alone does not establish the likely spend.
Con: AIDA token usage is extra on Enterprise and Mission-Critical, complicating cost planning for AI-heavy use.
Con: The governance and release-management model may be unnecessary overhead for teams seeking only a standalone semantic layer.

Alternatives

Cube is worth considering for teams that want a semantic-layer alternative with a free tier capped at 5 workbooks and 1,000 daily requests, plus one-day query-history retention and community support.

dbt Semantic Layer may suit teams already centered on dbt that can work within the Developer tier's one seat, 3,000 successful models per month, and one project; that tier does not include the Semantic Layer.

Definite offers a free plan capped at 2 users, 2 connectors, 1 GB of storage, 5 credits per month, and daily sync, which may suit smaller projects with modest needs.

Sema is another freemium option for teams evaluating a more bounded sandbox, with a free tier limited to one connector, one user, and 100 chat queries per month.

Strata is an alternative with a free tier for one developer and 25 users, plus two data sources per project.

Kyvos is a paid alternative with a cloud marketplace rate of 0.41 USD per core hour for the time Kyvos is used.

Quaeris Semantic Layer is a paid option with a Team plan at $1,000–$2,500 per month, billed monthly or annually depending on agents, users, and source systems.

Tableau is another option for teams evaluating a self-hosted analytics platform.

Verdict

Choose Starburst Enterprise Context Layer when governed, reusable data products must serve varied consumers across regulated or infrastructure-constrained environments. Its strongest reason to buy is the combination of access controls, versioned change workflows, semantic definitions, and deployment flexibility. Look elsewhere if the goal is only a metrics layer or if per-credit consumption and separately billed AIDA usage make costs hard to align with your workloads.
