Overview

Veryfi Invoices OCR API is a developer service that converts invoices into structured data for downstream systems. It is best suited to teams building accounts-payable, bill-pay, or purchase-order matching workflows. Its broad extraction and invoice-integrity checks are useful, but the paid entry point makes it a poor fit for small or occasional workloads.

Key features

Structured data and OCR

The API returns invoice data as JSON, including supplier details, line items, tax, payment information, and totals. Veryfi says it supports more than 150 fields, and the response also contains the recognized invoice text. That combination gives application teams both usable field values and source text for downstream processing. Line-item extraction and PO matching extend its relevance beyond basic OCR.

Document coverage and integrity checks

PDFs and images are accepted, with extraction intended to handle differences in invoice structure, geography, and language. Veryfi also describes digital tampering analysis, PDF layer analysis, and duplicate detection. These checks can add useful screening in accounts-payable flows, though they are not a substitute for review of questionable invoices.

A transaction is one document of up to 15 pages. Longer documents require a custom account configuration, so teams processing lengthy invoices should confirm that arrangement before adopting the service.

Developer and workflow support

SDKs and code samples cover Python, Node.js, PHP, C#, Java, and other languages. n8n and Zapier integrations provide workflow connections for teams that do not want to build every handoff themselves. Documentation, FAQs, human expert support, and a free demo round out the support options.

Pricing

The Free plan costs $0 per invoice and allows up to 100 documents per month, billed monthly. It is a practical way to evaluate a low-volume workflow, but the cap makes it unsuitable as a no-cost production tier for growing invoice operations.

Starter costs $500/mo minimum commitment, billed monthly, at $0.16 per invoice for 0–25,000 transactions/mo, with a 15-page maximum per transaction. The stated minimum commitment is a material threshold: teams should expect a meaningful monthly spend even if their actual invoice volume is modest. The plan’s included-invoice figure is 3,125 per month, so buyers should compare expected volume and the per-invoice charge before committing.

Growth uses custom pricing with volume discounts, unlimited storage, custom data retention, and SLA options. It is the relevant tier for larger or more specialized workloads that need those terms, but requires a sales conversation to establish cost. Veryfi offers a free trial as well as the free plan.

Platforms

Veryfi lists Android, iOS, web, and API platforms. For developers integrating invoice processing into existing software, the API is the central fit; mobile and web platform availability may also suit teams handling documents across devices.

Who it's for

Choose Veryfi when an accounts-payable or bill-pay application needs structured invoice fields, line items, OCR text, and checks for duplicate or altered documents in one API workflow. Its extraction breadth and developer tooling suit teams integrating invoice processing into an existing stack. It is less compelling for low-volume users who cannot justify the Starter minimum, or for teams whose needs are limited to occasional receipt capture.

Pros and cons

Pros

Rich invoice output: More than 150 supported fields, line items, and OCR text give downstream systems multiple useful forms of invoice data.
Workflow-oriented coverage: PO matching, duplicate detection, and tampering-related checks suit invoice operations that need more than text recognition.
Broad integration choices: SDKs across common programming languages plus n8n and Zapier can fit both custom applications and automation workflows.
Stated security and compliance posture: Veryfi says its platform is SOC 2 Type II certified, uses TLS 1.2 and 1.3 and AES encryption, and complies with GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA; it will sign a BAA upon request.

Cons

High paid entry commitment: Starter requires a $500/mo minimum, which is a substantial hurdle for small workloads.
Free-tier ceiling: The Free plan stops at 100 documents per month, limiting its usefulness for ongoing operations.
Long documents need special configuration: The standard transaction limit is 15 pages, so longer invoices require a custom arrangement.

Alternatives

For teams evaluating adjacent tools, Invoice Processing Software, Invoice OCR Software, OCR API Software, and AI Document Processing Software are relevant categories; Receipt Scanner Apps and Receipt Management Software focus on receipt workflows.

Receipt Reader AI is worth considering for receipt scanning: it has a free plan at $0/mo with 10 AI scans per month and one account, rather than Veryfi’s invoice-focused API and higher paid minimum.

Shoeboxed suits a receipt-management use case with a Starter plan at $9.00 per month, including 30 digital scans monthly, 20 paper scans yearly, one Magic Envelope yearly, unlimited mileage, and one user.

Bonro is a lower-cost receipt option for someone who wants on-device OCR: its free tier allows five receipts a month and has no export, while Starter is €6.99 per month.

Foreceipt offers a free plan with up to 100 receipts, 12-month retention, two team members, and limited bank-statement and report allowances; it is more naturally suited to receipt and expense tracking than invoice API integration.

Pennywick is an iOS-only receipt and budgeting choice, with five free receipt scans a week and manual ledger, budget, and savings tools.

Receipt Pro is an iOS receipt alternative with a free tier and in-app purchases.

ReceiptMe may fit receipt capture across mobile and web: its free plan includes 50 receipts and 10 AI extractions per month, plus vendor rules and mobile capture.

Smart Receipts is a simpler mobile receipt option, with a free plan centered on manual entry and basic expense reports.

Verdict

Veryfi is a strong candidate for developers building invoice-heavy accounts-payable or bill-pay workflows that can use broad field extraction, OCR text, and invoice-integrity checks. The principal reason to choose it is the depth of invoice data and workflow support; the principal reason to look elsewhere is the $500/mo minimum, especially for low-volume teams or receipt-first needs.
