Overview

TurboTax is tax-preparation software for federal and state returns, with web, mobile, and desktop options. It fits filers who want a route from a simple Form 1040 to returns involving investments, rentals, or self-employment, including access to expert help. Its value depends on whether the return fits the free tier or requires paid features and state filing.

Key features

TurboTax supports self-employment, investment, and rental income, but those are precisely the kinds of needs that disqualify a return from its simple-return free offer. Deluxe searches more than 350 deductions and credits and includes AI-powered Intuit Assist; Premium and Expert Assist Premium cover more than 450. That broader reach is relevant for filers with more involved returns, but comes with a substantially higher federal price.

Users can import, upload, or photograph documents, with automatic imports from more than one million participating employers and financial institutions. This can reduce manual entry when a user's providers participate. TurboTax also offers unlimited expert advice or the option to have an expert prepare the return from start to finish, a useful distinction for those who want support versus handing off the filing. Its accuracy guarantee covers IRS or state penalties and interest caused by calculation errors, subject to terms.

Mobile use requires an internet connection, and standard data rates apply when downloading and using the app. TurboTax says security is built into everything it does.

Pricing

TurboTax uses a freemium model, but the free tier is narrow: it covers simple Form 1040 returns, and about 37% of taxpayers qualify. Itemized deductions, business income, stock sales, rental income, and other schedules are excluded. The Free Edition is $0.00 USD per free, with federal and state filing included for eligible returns. The separate Mobile Free Offer is also $0.00 USD per free; users must start in the TurboTax or Credit Karma mobile app by February 28, 2026, and eligibility restrictions apply.

Do It Yourself Deluxe is priced at $79.00 USD per once, billed as $79 federal with state additional. It adds searches for 350+ deductions and credits; the offer says to file by March 31 to save and pay only when filing. It suits filers whose deductions exceed the free tier but who are comfortable preparing the return themselves. Do It Yourself Deluxe also appears at $79.00 USD per month, billed federal with state additional; check the applicable offer terms before choosing, since the listed billing terms differ.

Do It Yourself Premium costs $139.00 USD per once, billed federal with state additional, and includes 450+ deductions and credits. Expert Assist Premium costs $209.00 USD per once on the same federal-only basis and includes 450+ deductions and credits, with expert help available. These tiers better fit returns that need broader support, though state charges add to the quoted federal prices. TurboTax Expert Full Service uses custom pricing that varies by tax situation and forms used.

Most paid online and mobile products allow payment when filing, printing, mailing, or buying add-ons. Printing or electronically filing generally counts as satisfaction and waives the right to a refund.

Platforms

TurboTax is available on the web, mobile, and desktop. The mobile option adds flexibility, but requires internet access and may incur standard data rates.

Who it's for

Choose TurboTax if the return needs support for investment, rental, or self-employment income, or if expert guidance or full-service filing is a priority. It is less compelling for a basic return that qualifies for free filing elsewhere, or for filers who need a predictable total before adding state costs.

Pros and cons

Pros: Support for self-employment, investment, and rental income extends beyond simple wage returns.
Pros: Document import options and connections to more than one million participating providers can reduce manual input.
Pros: Expert advice, full-service preparation, and a calculation-error guarantee give filers several forms of support.
Cons: Free filing excludes common situations such as itemized deductions, stock sales, and rental income.
Cons: State filing is additional on several paid plans, so the federal price is not the complete cost.
Cons: Filing or printing generally ends refund eligibility, limiting the ability to change course after completing the return.

Alternatives

For a free option on eligible standard returns, TaxAct offers free federal filing, with state additional. CloudTax is worth considering for mobile-first users who want self-guided basic return support and up to two returns on its free tier. If an API-based tool for income and expense management with real-time tax calculation is the priority, Taxumo offers those functions on its free plan, while excluding tax preparation, filing, and payment.

H&R Block Online is another free option for simple tax situations on web and mobile. ClearTax offers DIY income-tax return filing and a monthly plan for salaried employees with a single Form 16. TaxSlayer offers a free plan with one federal and one state return. TaxDown provides a free calculation and result simulation, while filing requires a paid plan. For a Canadian tax product, TurboTax Canada has a free plan for simple tax situations.

Verdict

TurboTax is best for filers who need support beyond a simple return and value a choice between expert guidance and full-service preparation. Its breadth of income support and document imports are meaningful advantages; the main reasons to look elsewhere are the narrow free tier and state charges that raise the final cost.
