Overview

Telnyx combines two-way SMS, inbound webhooks, MMS, and short codes with sender options including 10DLC, toll-free numbers, and alphanumeric sender ID. Hosted SMS can put existing numbers to work for SMS and MMS without changing providers. That flexibility suits established messaging workflows; teams choosing a sender channel still need to weigh the destination and its associated costs.

Telnyx says it has numbers in more than 130 countries and handles over 1.3 billion messages monthly. Automated queuing, intelligent encoding, concatenation for long messages, and delivery reports address practical delivery and formatting work. A debugging tool can help investigate deliverability, while automatic STOP-word opt-outs unsubscribe recipients from future sends. These features reduce routine handling, but do not remove per-part or carrier costs.

Key features

Developer interfaces: REST APIs, documentation, and SDKs support Node.js, Python, Ruby, PHP, .NET, Java, and Go. This is a broad set of options for teams with different stacks. Agent Skills add integrations for Claude Code, Cursor, and Windsurf.
Message operations: Long texts are automatically split into multiple messages, and the API provides queuing, encoding, delivery reports, and debugging. The retrieval endpoint only returns messages no older than 10 days, a meaningful constraint for teams that need older message records through that endpoint.
Security and support: Telnyx states that data is encrypted in transit and at rest, with multifactor authentication and granular API-key permissions. Its listed certifications and compliance include ISO 27001:2022, ISO 27701:2019, SOC 2 Type II, PCI DSS, and GDPR. The SMS API includes free 24/7 expert support.

Pricing

Telnyx is usage-based, with SMS starting at $0.004 per message part and a $0 platform fee. Pay-as-you-go plans show 0.00 USD per month and bill usage; carrier passthrough and taxes vary by destination, and carrier fees may also apply. Automatic volume discounts apply after specified monthly thresholds; the SMS API pay-as-you-go plan cites discounts above 100M messages/month. There is no contract required on the general pay-as-you-go plan, which suits teams that want variable usage without a monthly platform charge. Message-part billing means long texts split into multiple messages can increase the bill.

The SMS API usage plan is 0.00 USD per month, billed, with carrier fees possibly applying; it gives published pay-as-you-go rates before volume tiers and covers inbound and outbound programmable SMS. SMS API pay as you go is 0.00 USD per month, billed per message part plus carrier fee, with a $0 platform fee and automatic discounts above 100M messages/month. The separate Pay as you go plan is 0.00 USD per month, billed at standard rates, with a card on file, automatic tier discounts, and no contract. These options suit teams wanting usage billing; none removes destination-dependent carrier charges.

Committed costs 500.00 USD per month and offers discounted usage rates, a named account manager, priority support, and higher limits. It is aimed at teams with enough predictable volume to benefit from discounted rates and managed support. Enterprise costs 5000.00 USD per month and provides custom enterprise pricing, dedicated infrastructure and IPs, private interconnect, in-region GPUs, and unlimited rate limits. That higher tier is for teams that need those infrastructure and rate-limit provisions rather than a basic messaging API.

There is no free plan or free trial. Free signup and a $0 platform fee do not include a stated message allowance. Level 1 verified accounts are capped at 50 outbound messages per day, and pretrial accounts are limited to Telnyx AI products; Messaging requires a full account. Those restrictions make the low-cost entry less useful for unrestricted early testing or production sends.

Platforms

The API is available on API and web platforms. Its language SDKs span Node.js, Python, Ruby, PHP, .NET, Java, and Go, making it a plausible fit for application teams across common backend stacks.

Who it's for

Telnyx fits product and platform teams that need programmable two-way messaging, multiple sender channels, or the ability to use existing numbers. Its delivery tooling and automatic opt-outs are useful for ongoing transactional or customer messaging. It is less compelling for teams that need a no-cost trial or a generous account-level testing allowance, and teams should account for message parts, carrier fees, and destination-based taxes in cost planning.

Pros and cons

Pro: Multiple sender types, MMS, inbound webhooks, and hosted SMS let teams support varied messaging workflows without replacing existing numbers.
Pro: Queuing, encoding, concatenation, delivery reports, debugging, and automatic opt-outs address delivery and compliance-related operations directly.
Pro: Broad SDK coverage and free 24/7 support give developers several implementation paths and an ongoing support channel.
Con: Level 1 verified accounts can send only 50 outbound messages per day, while pretrial accounts cannot use Messaging.
Con: Per-part rates sit alongside destination-dependent carrier fees and taxes, so the starting rate is not the full cost of every send.
Con: The retrieve-message endpoint has a 10-day age limit, restricting its usefulness for retrieving older messages.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see Transactional SMS Software.

Bandwidth Messaging API is another paid API and web option with a free trial; consider it if a trial is important and its U.S. outbound 10DLC or short-code plans suit your use case.
ClickSend SMS API offers a free trial and API, iOS, macOS, and web access; it is worth comparing if those platforms or its pay-as-you-go plans with top-ups from $20 fit your stack.
Messente has a free plan and offers SMS, WhatsApp, and Viber access through dashboard and API accounts; consider it if those channels and a free entry point matter.
Telnyx Text-to-Speech API is a separate Telnyx product for teams evaluating text-to-speech rather than SMS messaging.
Bird Verify includes verification with channel-message charges applying; consider it when verification, rather than general messaging, is the task.
Clickatell SMS API has a free plan and trial with prepaid outgoing messages; it is another option to compare for pay-as-you-go SMS.
Gupshup charges a standard 0.001 USD per-message fee across messages, with WhatsApp fees billed at actuals; compare it if that stated messaging fee structure is relevant to your channels.
Infobip SMS API offers a free trial and pay-as-you-go pricing with country- and network-dependent rates and volume discounts; consider it if those trial and pricing terms align with your needs.

Verdict

Telnyx SMS API is a strong fit for developers building global SMS and MMS into a product who value sender flexibility, delivery tooling, and hosted numbers. Its usage-based entry and free support are attractive, but the 50-message daily cap on Level 1 accounts, full-account messaging requirement, and carrier costs make it a poor choice for unrestricted trial use or cost planning based only on the starting rate.
