Overview

Vital’s oscillators reshape wavetable harmonics through stretching, shifting, smearing and skewing. This gives sound designers a range of ways to transform a source into new timbres, rather than relying only on preset selection. Sample conversion, direct wavetable editing and text generation broaden that creative toolkit, but Vital remains a focused synth rather than a general-purpose virtual instrument library.

Key features

Wavetables can come from pitch-splicing or vocoding samples, editing existing tables, or text prompts. Text-to-wavetable runs as a web service, with five requests per day unless a plan unlocks unlimited use. That allowance is enough for occasional exploration; prompt-heavy workflows will need a paid tier that includes unlimited requests.

Modulation is a particular strength: drag-and-drop routing, audio-rate modulation, stereo-splittable and keytracked LFOs, and custom envelope curves give sound designers considerable control over movement. Two routable voice filters and eight routable effects add shaping options, while an oscilloscope and spectrum viewer help inspect the result. MPE and microtonal tuning-file support also make Vital a better fit for expressive controllers and nonstandard tuning setups than a synth limited to conventional MIDI keyboard use.

Vital supports VST, VST3, AU and LV2 plugin formats. That range makes it adaptable to different plugin environments, while its system requirements set a clear compatibility floor: 64-bit operation and OpenGL 3 or higher, on Windows 10+, macOS 10.15+ or Ubuntu Linux 18.04+.

Pricing

The Basic plan is free at 0.00 USD per free and includes 75 presets, 25 wavetables and full synth features. It is the sensible starting point for learning Vital’s sound-design workflow, though the smaller library may be limiting for users who want a wider starting palette. The free tier does not include unlimited text-to-wavetable requests.

Plus costs 25.00 USD per once and includes 250 presets, 70 wavetables and full synth features. For a one-time payment, it expands the included library without reducing the synth itself. Pro costs 80.00 USD per once and increases the collection to 400+ presets and 150 wavetables, while also including unlimited text-to-wavetable. It best suits users who want both a larger resource library and frequent prompt-based generation.

The Subscription plan costs 5.00 USD per month, billed $5 / month. It includes store credit, subscriber-only packs, unlimited text-to-wavetable and prioritized support through private Discord channels or the forum. This is the option for users who value those recurring benefits and support; unlike Plus and Pro, it is a monthly commitment rather than a one-time purchase.

Platforms

Vital supports Linux, macOS and Windows, subject to the 64-bit and OpenGL 3 or higher requirements. The supported operating systems are Windows 10+, macOS 10.15+ and Ubuntu Linux 18.04+. Check graphics compatibility as well as the operating-system version before committing to a workflow.

Who it's for

Vital is best for producers and sound designers who want to create timbres through wavetable shaping and extensive modulation, especially those using MPE or microtonal tuning. Its free full-featured synth makes it a low-risk way to begin. It is less suitable for buyers primarily looking for a broad, ready-made instrument collection.

Pros and cons

Pro: The free Basic plan includes full synth features, so the core instrument is not gated behind a paid tier.
Pro: Sample conversion, wavetable editing and text generation offer distinct routes to original wavetable material.
Pro: Audio-rate modulation, flexible LFOs and custom envelopes support detailed sound movement.
Con: Text-to-wavetable is capped at five daily requests unless a plan unlocks unlimited use.
Con: Basic includes only 75 presets and 25 wavetables; users seeking a larger included library must move to a paid plan.
Con: The 64-bit and OpenGL 3 or higher requirements may rule out older systems or graphics setups.

Alternatives

For an entirely free, open-source option with built-in modules, consider Cardinal; adding modules to an existing build is not possible, so it is less flexible in that respect. Surge XT is another free, open-source virtual instrument plugin for Linux, macOS and Windows. If you want a free FM synthesizer, Dexed is GPL v3 software for those same desktop platforms.

DefleMask offers a one-time-purchase alternative, with a free legacy version described as a 32-bit-only unsupported demo. Synth1 is a free VSTi/AU plugin for macOS and Windows, while Helm is a pay-what-you-want standalone or plugin option for Linux, macOS and Windows. VCV Rack is worth considering for its free, open-source foundation and simple open plugin API. If you prefer a paid synth with a free trial, SynthMaster 3 costs 99.00 USD per once and includes six free expansions.

Verdict

Vital is a strong choice for sound designers who want a full-featured wavetable synth without an upfront cost, with paid plans scaling the included library and text-generation allowance. Its combination of wavetable creation, modulation depth and controller support is the main reason to choose it. Look elsewhere if you need a broad instrument library, cannot meet its graphics requirements, or expect unlimited text generation without paying.
