About
Archive of Our Own (AO3) is a nonprofit hosting site for transformative fanworks, including fanfiction. The web service is a project of the Organization for Transformative Works and is funded entirely by donations; users pay nothing and the site carries no ads. Work Search supports queries by tag, title, author, word count, hits, kudos, publication date, and language. Filters include ratings, warnings, categories, fandoms, characters, relationships, and freeform tags. Readers can download works in AZW3, EPUB, MOBI, PDF, and HTML, though downloads include all available chapters rather than a selected chapter. Site skins let users adjust colors, fonts, and layout, while work skins customize individual works. AO3 aims to support common desktop browsers, e-readers, screen readers, and default browsers on most iOS, Android, and Windows mobile devices. Its open-source archiving software is hosted on GitHub. Account creation requires an invitation, which AO3 says helps keep growth within hardware, bandwidth, and support capacity. Mobile apps are not currently available, and a public API remains several major releases away on the roadmap.
Who it is for
AO3 suits readers and creators looking for a donation-funded archive with detailed discovery filters and downloadable works. It may also suit those who value fan-built open-source archiving software and customizable presentation.
