Dify provides an open-source environment for making AI applications. Its visual canvas links model calls with retrieval, tools, code, branches, triggers, and human review. Files and web material can become searchable knowledge, while model and tool providers connect for publishing through multiple channels and usage tracking. It runs in the cloud or under your control.

Review

In a line

Dify brings together visual workflows, agents, searchable knowledge, model connections, publishing, and monitoring in an open-source AI application platform.

What it does

On the Workflow Studio canvas, teams arrange model calls, knowledge retrieval, tools, code, branching, triggers, and human review. A workflow may be launched by a user, an API request, a schedule, a webhook, a plugin event, or an uploaded payload.

Knowledge Pipeline converts files, websites, online documents, drives, crawlers, and other web material into searchable knowledge bases carrying metadata and citations. Retrieval can use semantic, keyword, hybrid, or reranked methods together with metadata filters.

Agents may be configured through conversation or manually, then released as apps, embedded on sites, or reused as workflow nodes. Applications can appear as hosted web apps, website embeds, API endpoints, or MCP servers, with logs, feedback, annotations, latency, and usage monitoring.

How it connects

Model connections include OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, and xAI. The Marketplace lists Slack, Perplexity, ComfyUI, Firecrawl, and more than 200 additional tools. Custom definitions are supported.

Every published app and knowledge base has a REST API. Calls use Bearer keys; app keys apply to one app, while knowledge keys can be limited to selected knowledge bases. Dify Cloud uses its own API base, while self-hosted installations use their instance address.

The Community Edition is open source and can be deployed with Docker. Dify runs through web, API, extension, Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted setups. Enterprise deployment can run in a customer VPC, on premises, or in an isolated network, with Kubernetes Helm deployment.

Good fit

Teams can use Dify to visually assemble AI workflows, ground responses in their documents, configure agents, and deliver the result as a web app, embed, API, or MCP tool.

It also fits organizations that want model and tool choices in one place, reusable workflow components, and monitoring for latency, usage, logs, feedback, and annotations. Enterprise adds single sign-on, role controls, audit logs, provisioning, and redacted prompt history.

Watch for

Self-hosting makes you responsible for databases, vector stores, secrets, backups, upgrades, capacity, and incident response. The Docker setup needs at least two CPU cores and 4 GiB of memory, and starts several core and supporting services.

A G2 reviewer reported that hidden startup variables, small cloud variable-size limits, and missing list-membership operations blocked some personalization and routing tasks. The same review said paid support sometimes sent generic documentation instead of implementation help.

The open-source license is a modified Apache 2.0 license. It restricts unauthorized multi-tenant use and removing frontend branding or copyright notices.

Pricing

Dify has a free Community plan with core public-repository features, one workspace, and the Dify Open Source License. Its free Sandbox plan provides 200 message credits, one workspace, one member, five apps, 50 knowledge documents, 50MB of storage, 3,000 trigger events, 30-day logs, and 5,000 API calls per month.

Professional costs $590 a year, billed annually. It includes 5,000 message credits per month, three members, 50 apps, 500 documents, 5GB of storage, unlimited logs, and no Dify API rate limit. Team costs $1590 a year, billed annually, with 10,000 monthly message credits, 50 members, 200 apps, 1,000 documents, 20GB of storage, unlimited triggers and logs, and no Dify API rate limit.

Enterprise is priced on request and includes commercial-license authorization, multiple workspaces, single sign-on, advanced security controls, negotiated service levels, official updates and maintenance, and professional support. The pricing note lists paid access from $59/mo.

Verdict

Choose Dify when you want a single place for AI workflows, model and tool connections, document retrieval, and delivery through web, API, embed, or MCP channels. Its open-source edition gives technical teams a self-managed route, while Enterprise covers isolated deployment and additional controls.

Look elsewhere if you cannot operate supporting infrastructure, need unrestricted workflow-variable handling, or require implementation-focused help from support. Review the license before offering a multi-tenant service, and compare the included message credits, storage, members, apps, and API allowances with your expected use.

Our take

Dify is a practical choice for teams assembling AI apps from visual workflows, agents, model providers, tools, and private knowledge. Hosted plans sit alongside an open-source Docker edition, with several app delivery methods. The tradeoff is operational responsibility when self-hosted, along with license restrictions and reported gaps around workflow variables. Free plans can cover small experiments, while paid tiers add capacity and collaboration. Enterprise is the fit for isolated deployments, stronger access controls, and formal support.
