Despite the release of foldable smartphones from several Chinese smartphone brands, none have made their devices available on a global scale. However, Google is poised to be the first brand to challenge Samsung in the global foldable smartphone market. It appears that Google has taken cues from Samsung and incorporated the most sought-after features into its foldable phones. As the competition heats up, it will be interesting to see how these brands continue to innovate and cater to the demands of consumers.
According to a CNBC report, Google is set to unveil its first foldable smartphone, the Pixel Fold, during its Google I/O 2023 event in May. The device is expected to hit the shelves in most western countries by the end of June 2023. The report suggests that the Pixel Fold will come with an IP rating for water resistance, much like the Galaxy Z Fold 4, and that Google will tout it as having the most durable hinge of any foldable smartphone on the market. As Samsung has already introduced an IPX8 rating to its foldable phones, it is likely that Google will incorporate this feature to remain competitive and attract potential buyers.
In addition to the water resistance and hinge durability, the same CNBC report also indicates that the Pixel Fold will feature a 5.8-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch foldable internal display. The smartphone is expected to be powered by the Tensor G2 processor, which is the same chip found in the Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro. However, the Pixel Fold is reportedly 20 grams heavier than the Galaxy Z Fold 4, weighing in at 283g. On a single charge, the device is expected to last for 24 hours under normal usage conditions and up to 72 hours in power-saving mode, which is similar to the performance of the Pixel 7 lineup.
According to the same CNBC report, the Pixel Fold is expected to be priced at $1,700, which is in line with the cost of the Galaxy Z Fold 4. With a durable hinge, water-resistant design, and a competitive price point, the Pixel Fold may pose a serious challenge to Samsung’s foldable smartphone dominance. Additionally, with Google’s reputation for providing excellent user interfaces and software, the Pixel Fold may appeal to consumers who value an optimized user experience.
