OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T getting Android Oreo update soon

Those who have been holding on to their OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T devices are in for a pleasant surprise, their handsets are all set to receive the Android Oreo update. The Chinese company announced in a blog post, confirming that OxygenOS 5.

0 is on the way for the last year’s flagship phones.

However, while this no doubt is the piece of news that current owners of the OnePlus 3 and 3T have been waiting for, the company has also made it known that this is the last update that they would be getting.

OnePlus has been testing the Oreo update for it’s 3 and 3T handsets since October in beta form but is now being made available as an official update finally.

Interestingly, the more current OnePlus 5T is launched with Android Nougat pre-installed with the company promising the Android Oreo soon. However, it isn’t before next year that the Oreo update is expected to be ready for the latest flagship. That would be pretty late for an otherwise excellent handset given that that would be the time when the tech world would be abuzz with rumors and speculation about Android P.

OnePlus meanwhile has also stated the update would be rolled out incrementally. So there would be a small section of OnePlus 3 and 3T users that would be getting the update today before it is made available on a wider scale.

So among the Oreo specific new features to look forward to on the OnePlus 3 and 3T phones include Picture in Picture, Google AutoFill, Smart text selection as well as the Quick Setting design, to name a few. Also on the anvil is the Parallel Apps feature that will let users open several instances of an app. Also included in the Oreo update is the security patch for September. Curiously, the more recent November security patch is not being made available.

In another related development, OnePlus’ India head has confirmed the company would be phasing out the OnePlus 5. That again makes for quite a logical decision given the phone’s rather dated looks. In contrast, the latest 5T sports a more advanced design that befits its year 2017 flagship status.
