Overview

Live2D Cubism is a character-animation editor built around animating drawn illustrations as 2D models. It suits illustrators, VTuber creators, and game or app teams that want to bring existing artwork into a puppet-style workflow. Its strength is focused character expression; the main trade-off is that commercial eligibility and model caps make the free tier a poor fit for some projects.

Physics, lip sync, and mesh deformation give teams practical ways to add movement without replacing the original illustration. The range of export formats and SDK options also makes Cubism relevant to teams planning to use models across different applications and runtimes.

Key features

Illustration-based models: Cubism turns drawn artwork into movable 2D models. Mesh deformation and a puppet workflow make it a natural fit when a project needs expressive characters built from illustrations, rather than a general-purpose animation tool.
Expression tools: Physics and lip sync can add movement and facial expression. These are useful for character-led animation and streaming, though the workflow remains centred on models made from artwork.
Broad exports: Outputs include PNG, JPEG, GIF, MP4, WebM, MOV, MOC3, model3.json, and motion3.json. That mix spans common image and video formats as well as model and motion files, giving teams options for different downstream uses.
Connected workflows: Cubism files are supported by nizima LIVE and third-party applications. Live2D also provides an After Effects plug-in and Photoshop scripts. An integration feature lets external apps set and retrieve model parameter values, but enabling remote connections can expose users to malicious attacks over the Internet.
SDK paths: SDKs are available for Unity, Native, Web, Java, Unreal Engine, and Cocos Creator. SDK support varies by SDK across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and WebGL. The SDK download has no initial cost, but release licensing is separate and is not included with PRO for business.

Pricing

Cubism offers a 42-day PRO trial; afterward, the Editor continues as FREE. FREE is capped at one texture file up to 2048 px, 100 ArtMesh, 30 motion parameters, 50 deformers, and 30 parts. Going over those limits prevents saving, so it is best treated as a constrained evaluation tier rather than a safe production plan for larger models.

FREE commercial use is limited to General Users and Small-Scale Enterprises with annual sales under 10 million yen. Other users may use it only for non-commercial or supervision purposes. Teams should establish their eligibility before committing a project to this tier.

Cubism PRO for indie has flexible monthly pricing at 13.26 USD per month. The annual plan costs 91.02 USD per year in year one, 74.96 USD per year in year two, and 68.07 USD per year from year three onward. Annual subscriptions renew and cannot be cancelled during the subscription period. The three-year plan is 234.05 USD per month and is non-renewable. These options are aimed at general users and small-scale enterprises; monthly billing offers flexibility, while annual commitments trade cancellation flexibility for lower later-year rates.

Cubism PRO for business is aimed at medium or large businesses. Monthly billing is 61.32 USD per month. Annual pricing is 420.68 USD per year in year one, 380.91 USD per year in year two, and 350.32 USD per year from year three onward; annual subscriptions renew and cannot be cancelled during the subscription period. Business users should also account for the separate SDK release license, which is not included in PRO for business.

Platforms

Cubism Editor downloads are offered for Windows and macOS, including Apple Silicon and Intel Mac versions. The broader SDK platform range depends on the SDK and includes Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and WebGL.

Who it's for

Cubism is a strong fit for illustrators and character teams creating animated 2D models for mobile apps, console games, VTuber streaming, or animation. Its export choices and SDK ecosystem are useful when a model needs to move into a wider application stack. It is less suitable for organizations that do not meet the free tier's commercial-use criteria unless they budget for PRO, and teams planning commercial SDK releases need to treat SDK licensing as a separate cost.

Pros and cons

Pro: Physics, lip sync, and mesh deformation focus the tool on expressive character animation from drawn artwork.
Pro: Image, video, model, and motion exports plus SDKs for several engines and platforms give teams multiple routes to deployment.
Pro: The 42-day PRO trial continues into a usable FREE tier rather than ending access to the Editor.
Con: FREE has tight model caps, and exceeding them prevents saving.
Con: FREE commercial use is restricted by user type and annual sales, which can rule it out for larger businesses.
Con: PRO for business does not include SDK release licensing, so the subscription alone may not cover a commercial release workflow.
Con: Remote external-app connections carry a security warning, requiring care when enabling integrations.

Alternatives

Rive is worth considering when collaborative files and broad editor platform coverage are more important; its free plan includes three collaborative files and one project, and it supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows.

SpineBones is a free, Windows- and macOS-focused option if a 300-frame timeline, playback up to 120 FPS, and WebM, PNG-sequence, or spritesheet exports suit the workflow.

Spriter is another option for basic PNG and spritesheet animation, with a free version and a one-user Pro license priced at 59.99 USD per month.

Effekseer may suit teams seeking a free, open-source program across desktop, mobile, and web platforms.

SkelForm is a free and open-source 2D skeletal animator available on Linux, macOS, web, and Windows.

Keyframe.it is a free web option.

RenderPop Spritesheet Editor is a free web option.

SpriteBrew is a freemium web option.

Verdict

Choose Live2D Cubism if your team needs expressive 2D character models built from illustrations and values the combination of deformation, physics, lip sync, and multiple export routes. Look elsewhere if the FREE commercial terms exclude your organization, the model caps are too restrictive, or you need SDK release licensing bundled into the business subscription.
