Overview

Alcohol 52% turns optical disc images into virtual CD/DVD-ROM drives. Persistent mounts let an image remain available as a virtual disc, which is useful for collections accessed repeatedly. Support for CCD, CUE, ISO, BWF, CDI, MDS and NRG accommodates several common image formats, while the 31-drive ceiling gives users room to keep multiple images mounted.

This is a mounting and emulation tool, not a complete optical-disc workflow: image writing is not supported. DVD titles protected with CSS cannot be backed up because of legal restrictions, so users whose work depends on those discs should choose another approach.

Key features

Virtual drives: Create up to 31 virtual CD/DVD-ROM drives, useful for keeping a sizeable image collection accessible without swapping physical discs.
Image mounting: Mount optical images and keep mounts persistent. The format range covers CCD, CUE, ISO, BWF, CDI, MDS and NRG.
No image writing: Alcohol 52% can mount images but cannot write them, limiting its role to users who do not need image creation or burning within the same tool.
Support channels: Manuals, FAQs, a support forum staffed by the support team and direct email contact give users several ways to seek help.
Privacy controls: Alcohol Soft says it collects site interaction information, operating system and IP address, and says these details do not contain personally identifiable information. Users may opt into the Bright Data network for some premium features and can turn it off in settings. The license agreement says Alcohol 120% installs Bright Data components; that statement concerns Alcohol 120%, not Alcohol 52%.

Pricing

The pricing is simple, but the editions have important boundaries. Both free options cost 0.00 USD. The 15 day trial costs 0.00 USD and provides a 15-day evaluation period; capabilities are limited only by the number of available virtual drives. The Free Edition also costs 0.00 USD, but is marked “Not for Business use,” making it a home-use option rather than a no-cost route for workplace deployment.

The paid Alcohol 52% licence costs 27.00 USD per once for a single licence purchase. It includes lifetime free upgrades, but requires online activation. That one-time price suits an individual Windows user who wants the paid licence and ongoing upgrades; the single-licence term is not a multi-seat business plan.

Platforms

Alcohol 52% runs on Windows, with downloads for Windows operating systems except Windows 98/ME. It is not a fit for teams standardizing on Linux, macOS or cross-platform tools.

Who it's for

The strongest fit is a Windows user who regularly mounts optical images and wants several virtual drives available at once. Alcohol Soft also identifies home users working with game CDs and movie DVDs, plus librarians and school administrators archiving recordable media collections. The CSS restriction narrows the movie-disc use case, while the Free Edition's business restriction rules it out for commercial use.

Pros and cons

Pro — generous virtual-drive capacity: Up to 31 drives can keep many images accessible concurrently.
Pro — broad image support: Seven named formats cover a range of optical image files.
Pro — paid licence includes lifetime upgrades: A single purchase avoids a recurring subscription for the stated licence.
Con — no image writing: Users needing to create or write images will need another tool.
Con — free edition excludes business use: Organizations cannot treat the free edition as a workplace licence.
Con — CSS-protected DVD backup is unavailable: That restriction rules out a significant class of movie-disc backup tasks.
Con — Windows only: Mixed-platform teams will need another solution for non-Windows systems.

Alternatives

For a different virtual-drive option, compare the Virtual Drive Software category; for tools centered on creating images, see ISO Creation Software.

ImDisk is a free Windows option with API support and voluntary usage fees; choose it if that free-to-use model and platform scope better fit your environment.

Arsenal Image Mounter offers a free mode with disk-image mounting, temporary write support, BitLocker tools, CLI and PowerShell, making it worth considering when those capabilities matter.
DAEMON Tools Lite has a free plan with basic imaging, partner offers and limited support, plus a 29.99 USD one-time Personal plan; consider it if those terms and basic imaging scope suit your needs.
RaiDrive is another freemium option for Linux and Windows.
VHD Attach is a free Windows alternative for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 and above.
CDEmu is a free GPL v2 or later Linux optical-drive and disc emulator; choose it when Linux is the target platform.
ExpanDrive is a freemium option for Linux, macOS and Windows.

Verdict

Alcohol 52% is a focused choice for Windows users who need persistent optical-image mounts, broad format support and capacity for up to 31 virtual drives. Its paid single licence includes lifetime upgrades, while the free edition gives home users a zero-cost route. Look elsewhere if you need image writing, CSS-protected DVD backups, a business-usable free plan or support beyond Windows.
