Overview

MarkLogic natively handles documents, semantic graphs and geospatial data, with relational views for SQL analytics and support for vector and temporal data. It accepts JSON, XML, binary and text, and supports transactions. That combination can bring varied workloads together; teams with a narrow database need may find the breadth unnecessary, especially when commercial pricing is custom.

Key features

Search and data integration

Built-in search indexes data immediately and scores results for relevance, making search part of the database platform rather than a separate layer. Data Hub ingests, indexes and curates information through harmonization, mastering and enrichment. APIs and connectors for MuleSoft, Apache NiFi, Kafka, Hadoop, Esri and BI tools are useful when those systems are already part of the stack.

Resilience and security

High availability, horizontal scaling, disaster recovery, rollbacks and point-in-time recovery address continuity and recovery needs for important data services. Security features include role-based access controls, element- or property-level security, auditing and AES-256 encryption at rest, with LDAP, Kerberos and SAML authentication integration. MarkLogic says it complies with GDPR and describes Common Criteria and STIG evaluations or deployments.

Pricing

MarkLogic uses a freemium model, but each named plan has custom pricing. The Developer edition supports up to 1TB of data and is restricted to noncommercial use, so it is suited to development and evaluation rather than commercial production. Enterprise offers unlimited data storage for organizations that need production capacity, while Progress Data Platform includes 100+ enterprise connectors for integration-heavy deployments.

Managed SaaS includes 24/7 infrastructure management, with Progress handling installation, upgrades, backups, monitoring and user management. Bring-Your-Own License supports multi-cloud, private and hybrid cloud architectures, fitting teams that need those deployment arrangements. A free plan and free trial are available, but neither removes the Developer edition's noncommercial restriction or its 1TB limit.

Platforms

MarkLogic supports API, Linux, self-hosted, web and Windows environments. It can run on premises, in virtualized environments, public cloud or hybrid environments, so teams can align deployment with existing infrastructure. Managed hosting is also available through Progress SaaS services.

Who it's for

MarkLogic is aimed at organizations that need to combine document, graph, geospatial and relational access with integrated search, data curation and recovery capabilities. Progress identifies financial services, insurance, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, media, national security and government among its user industries. Free role-based training, including instructor-led online sessions, videos and tutorials, can help teams build skills; the commercial plans' custom pricing remains a significant budgeting consideration.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple data models, SQL support and built-in search can consolidate data access and discovery in one platform.
Pros: Data Hub curation and connectors for established integration and analytics tools suit complex data pipelines.
Pros: Recovery features, fine-grained security and multiple deployment options support demanding operational environments.
Cons: Developer edition is capped at 1TB and barred from commercial use, so it cannot serve as a low-cost production tier.
Cons: All named plans use custom pricing, which makes cost comparison and budget planning less direct.

Alternatives

RavenDB is worth considering for teams seeking a freemium database with developer and community plans. Choose Firestore instead when a freemium document database on Android, iOS and web is the better fit. Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse offers an always-free tier with capacity limits for teams evaluating that option. Apache CouchDB is a free, open-source, self-hosted choice for single-node or clustered deployments. LiteDB is a free option for teams that need commercial use without a license fee. Amazon DocumentDB is a paid alternative with a free trial for teams considering its serverless offering. Couchbase Lite is a paid option for teams looking for its Couchbase Mobile bundle. MongoDB Ops Manager is another option for teams considering MongoDB Enterprise Advanced, which includes Ops Manager.

Verdict

Choose MarkLogic when your organization needs one platform for varied data models, integrated search and data curation, with deployment and recovery controls suited to enterprise systems. Its main advantage is that breadth; its main drawback is that commercial use requires a custom-priced plan, while the free Developer edition is noncommercial and limited to 1TB. Teams with narrower needs or a hard requirement for predictable low-cost production should look elsewhere.
