Overview

Antrea is an open-source Kubernetes networking project that implements pod networking and Kubernetes NetworkPolicy. It is best suited to teams running Kubernetes that want more policy controls and diagnostics without replacing their cluster networking model. Its strongest case is the combination of familiar Kubernetes policies with cluster-level controls and multi-cluster features; the Open vSwitch requirement and platform limits deserve close attention.

Key features

Antrea uses Open vSwitch for its data plane, including Kubernetes Service load balancing. Teams can run an overlay with VXLAN or Geneve, or operate without one when their infrastructure supports that choice. That flexibility helps fit different network designs, but every Kubernetes node must have the Open vSwitch kernel module.

Its policy model extends Kubernetes NetworkPolicy with tiers, rule priorities, cluster-level policies, and Node policies. Those controls give platform teams more ways to organize and apply security rules than the base policy model, including across a cluster rather than only at the workload level.

For teams operating more than one cluster, Antrea can federate clusters with a unified data plane, multi-cluster Services, and a shared security posture. Diagnostics include packet tracing, policy analysis, and flow inspection through CLI and UI tools; Prometheus metrics support monitoring. Integrations and guides cover Prometheus, Octant, Multus, and Fluentd.

Antrea supports IPsec or WireGuard encryption for pod traffic between Linux nodes, but not Windows nodes. That makes mixed-OS environments a poor fit when uniform node-to-node encryption is a requirement.

Pricing

Antrea: 0.00 USD per free under the Apache License 2.0. The free plan is the open-source project itself, not a managed service; teams need a Kubernetes cluster and the Open vSwitch kernel module on every node. There is no free trial because the software is free. No paid tier or seat-based pricing is part of this plan.

The trade-off is operational ownership: teams deploy and run Antrea within their Kubernetes environment and rely on community channels, including Slack, mailing lists, meetings, and office hours, for project support.

Platforms

Antrea supports API, Linux, self-hosted, and Windows environments, with hybrid deployment and a centralized control plane. Its protocol support includes VXLAN, Geneve, STT, GRE, IPsec, WireGuard, BGP, and IPFIX. The project says it has been tested with Kubernetes 1.23 or later.

Deployment guides cover Amazon EKS, Azure AKS, and Google GKE, though GKE is marked Alpha. Azure support is no longer tested starting with Antrea 2.5, and Azure-related issues receive best-effort handling. Teams choosing AKS should weigh that support posture rather than assuming it is validated alongside the other deployment paths.

Who it's for

Antrea fits Kubernetes platform and security teams that can manage cluster networking, need more policy structure than Kubernetes NetworkPolicy alone provides, and value diagnostics or multi-cluster federation. It is less suitable for teams seeking a managed networking service, requiring encryption on Windows nodes, or unwilling to operate Open vSwitch on every node.

Pros and cons

More policy control: tiers, priorities, cluster-level policies, and Node policies extend the Kubernetes policy foundation.
Useful multi-cluster scope: federation combines a unified data plane, multi-cluster Services, and security posture across clusters.
Actionable diagnostics: packet tracing, policy analysis, flow inspection, and Prometheus metrics help operators investigate network behavior.
Node-level prerequisite: Open vSwitch kernel module installation on every node adds a concrete infrastructure requirement.
Uneven platform coverage: encryption is Linux-only, GKE is Alpha, and Azure support is best-effort from Antrea 2.5 onward.

Alternatives

For another free Kubernetes networking option with Linux and Windows support, compare OVN-Kubernetes. Teams looking beyond Kubernetes networking to enterprise DLP across endpoints, email, web, networks, and storage can consider Trellix Data Loss Prevention, which offers on-premises or SaaS management.

ColorTokens Xshield is a paid alternative with a free trial and API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows platforms. Elisity Microsegmentation is a paid enterprise network microsegmentation option. HashiCorp Nomad is freemium and supports Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows. Zentera CoIP Access Platform and Zero Networks Segment are paid alternatives. Tetrate Service Bridge is a paid service mesh offered hosted or on-premise.

Verdict

Choose Antrea if your team runs Kubernetes, can meet the Open vSwitch prerequisite, and wants richer policy controls, diagnostics, and multi-cluster networking in an open-source project. Look elsewhere if you need Windows traffic encryption, stronger Azure validation, or a managed service that takes cluster networking operations off your team.
