Overview

CloudFormation groups resources into stacks described by YAML or JSON templates, giving teams a repeatable way to provision and manage infrastructure. It supports workflows from a single EC2 instance to complex multi-Region applications, including CI/CD automation. Managed state, resource import, policy as code, and self-hosted execution make it more than a template renderer, but its supported cloud is AWS.

The service itself has no charge for AWS and Alexa resource providers. Resources created by stacks are billed at their standard AWS rates, and third-party provider or custom hook operations may also incur charges.

Key features

Reviewable changes and drift

Change Sets preview proposed stack updates and flag when resources may be deleted or replaced. That gives operators a chance to catch risky consequences before execution, though it does not replace reviewing the change itself. Drift Detection tracks modifications made outside CloudFormation, helping teams identify when deployed resources no longer match the managed configuration.

Authoring and deployment options

Teams can write templates directly in YAML or JSON, or use the AWS CDK to define cloud environments in TypeScript, Python, Java, or .NET; the CDK provisions through CloudFormation. AWS SAM adds shorthand YAML for functions, APIs, databases, and event source mappings, transforming it into CloudFormation syntax at deployment. These options accommodate different authoring styles while keeping deployment within CloudFormation.

StackSets deploy a common resource set across multiple AWS accounts and Regions from one template, which is useful for organizations applying shared infrastructure patterns. Stacks can also be updated from templates in a remote Git repository. The CloudFormation Registry extends the model to third-party resources and modules, with examples including MongoDB, Datadog, Atlassian Opsgenie, JFrog, and Splunk.

Security and access

CloudFormation encrypts data at rest and uses encrypted communication channels; AWS recommends TLS 1.3 and requires TLS 1.2. IAM controls access to the service, while CloudTrail logs API calls. These controls fit teams already managing AWS identity and audit practices, rather than providing a separate cross-cloud security layer.

Pricing

AWS CloudFormation: 0.00 USD per free. CloudFormation itself is free for its AWS and Alexa resource providers, with no free trial because there is no paid service plan to trial. The free service does not include the cost of the AWS resources stacks create; those are billed at their standard rates.

The first 1,000 operations for third-party providers and custom hooks are included in the Free Tier, and the first 30 seconds of each operation have no additional charge. Those operations may incur charges beyond the included allowance or time. Teams using only AWS and Alexa resource providers avoid an additional CloudFormation charge, but should account for resource and extension costs in their deployment budgets.

Platforms

CloudFormation supports API, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. It supports AWS only, so it is not a fit for teams that need to manage infrastructure across multiple cloud providers through the same service.

Who it's for

CloudFormation is best for AWS-centered engineering and operations teams that want repeatable infrastructure definitions, previewable changes, drift tracking, and coordinated deployments across accounts or Regions. It also suits teams standardizing serverless or language-based infrastructure authoring while retaining CloudFormation as the provisioning layer. Organizations with mixed-cloud estates should weigh its AWS boundary carefully.

Pros and cons

Pro: Change Sets reveal possible deletion or replacement before execution, supporting more deliberate stack updates.
Pro: StackSets let teams distribute a common template across multiple AWS accounts and Regions.
Pro: CDK, SAM, and third-party Registry resources broaden authoring and resource choices without leaving the CloudFormation deployment model.
Con: AWS is the only supported cloud, limiting its usefulness as a unified infrastructure workflow for multi-cloud teams.
Con: Free service pricing does not cover created AWS resources, and third-party provider or custom hook operations may carry additional charges.

Alternatives

For teams comparing adjacent infrastructure and policy tooling, these directories cover different parts of the stack:

Choose Chef InSpec when you need infrastructure compliance testing and want a freemium option with a free plan and trial. CIS-CAT Pro Assessor is a paid alternative for teams seeking a security configuration assessment tool. Conftest is a free, Apache 2.0-licensed option for policy testing. Terratest is a free, Apache 2.0-licensed open-source project for infrastructure testing. cfn-lint is a free MIT-0-licensed option for validating CloudFormation templates. Cinc Auditor offers a free distribution of Chef InSpec without formal warranties or support. kubeconform is a free option for teams working with Kubernetes configuration validation. terraform-plugin-testing is a free Go module for testing Terraform providers.

Verdict

Choose AWS CloudFormation if AWS is your operating center and you need repeatable, reviewable stack management that can extend across accounts and Regions. Its deployment controls and authoring options make it a capable foundation for AWS infrastructure workflows. Look elsewhere if your priority is a shared infrastructure control plane across cloud providers, or if your cost model cannot accommodate the resources and third-party operations stacks may invoke.
