Overview

The tool parses Bedrock worlds into an offline-capable, two-dimensional browser viewer and other visual outputs. It covers 256 Overworld and Nether layers, from bedrock to the build limit, making it a focused way to inspect terrain and world contents without relying on a hosted map service. It is not a substitute for a general hex editor: its value is in turning a Bedrock save into navigable visual information.

Bedrock Viz can change world files while running, so make a backup copy and work from that. If you serve generated maps, keep sensitive files out of the served output. Those precautions are central to using it safely, not optional housekeeping.

Key features

Layered world viewer

The viewer includes Overworld and Nether layers, biome, mob, item, and spawnable-block views, chunk boundaries, elevation shading, and distance measurement. Together, these tools help builders locate structures, compare terrain, and examine where world features occur. The 2D presentation is suited to inspection, not a richer 3D exploration workflow.

Opening the viewer directly as a local file can trigger browser restrictions: block information on mouseover and the elevation overlay may not work in Chrome. Firefox works best in that situation. For users who want to avoid those restrictions, generated maps can instead be served locally with Docker and NGINX; the viewer is based on OpenLayers.

Images, movies, and caveats

Bedrock Viz can generate images of world layers, biomes, block light, block height, and grass color. It can also create movies of world layers from bedrock to the build limit, but that workflow requires ffmpeg. These exports suit people who need a visual record or want to inspect a particular property outside the interactive viewer; movie generation adds a dependency that the map and still-image workflows do not require.

Slime-chunk results may be unreliable. Confirm that slimes actually spawn before committing substantial building or excavation work based on the map. For Android backups, the README describes a DropSync-and-Dropbox workflow, but it has only been lightly tested, so it should not be treated as a dependable transfer path without checking the result.

Pricing

Bedrock Viz is free: the Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is GPL-2.0 licensed for Minecraft Bedrock Edition worlds. There are no paid tiers, seat counts, quotas, or trial terms to weigh. That makes it accessible for solo players and teams alike, though the license and Bedrock-specific scope are part of the choice.

Platforms

Bedrock Viz supports Linux, macOS, Windows, and web viewing. Windows users can download a Windows 10 zip containing bedrock-viz.exe. macOS 10.15 and later are supported through Homebrew. Linux users are directed to download the source and compile it, which is a more involved setup than the packaged Windows option. The browser viewer can be used offline, but local-file browser limits may affect some features.

Who it's for

Choose Bedrock Viz if you want a free way to map and inspect Minecraft Bedrock worlds, especially when layered views, offline access, image exports, or a local map server fit your workflow. It is less suitable if you need guaranteed slime-chunk accuracy, a polished packaged Linux installation, or a tool that can be run against a world without backup precautions. Teams serving maps should also plan carefully around which files enter the served directory.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad Overworld and Nether inspection across 256 layers helps builders examine more than a single surface map.
Pros: Biome, mob, item, spawnable-block, chunk, elevation, and distance views give practical context for locating and planning builds.
Pros: Free, GPL-2.0 licensed, and usable offline, with still-image and movie outputs beyond the browser map.
Cons: It can change world files, so using it without a backup risks the save being inspected.
Cons: Local-file restrictions can disable hover details and elevation shading in Chrome, while Linux installation requires compiling from source.
Cons: Slime-chunk findings may be wrong, and movie output requires ffmpeg.

Alternatives

For Bedrock-focused map discovery, browse Minecraft World Map Viewers. If the task is raw binary inspection rather than visualizing a world, the Hex Editors category is a better starting point.

dhex is a free Linux and macOS hex editor for readers who need to inspect or edit raw data rather than generate Bedrock maps. Windows users who want a hex editor with basic editing features and a free trial can consider Hex Editor Neo, though its free plan has limited or no support. Hex Fiend is a free, open-source option for macOS users who want a BSD-style-licensed hex editor. Choose HxD if you need a free Windows hex editor for private or commercial use. ImHex and REHex are free cross-platform open-source hex editors for readers who need raw-data editing across Linux, macOS, and Windows. wxHexEditor is another free cross-platform option, described as a hex editor and disk editor. BinEd may fit readers who want a free, open-source editor spanning Android, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows.

Verdict

Bedrock Viz is a strong fit for Bedrock players and builders who want offline, layered world inspection and multiple export formats without paying for a plan. Its defining advantage is the breadth of map and image views for a Bedrock save; its defining drawback is the need to protect the source world and verify uncertain results, particularly slime chunks. Choose it when those safeguards fit your workflow, and look elsewhere for general hex editing or when you need more dependable slime-chunk guidance.
