Overview

SRTGen is a web and API platform for transcribing, translating, styling, and dubbing video subtitles. It is best suited to creators and localization teams that need those steps in one workflow; its breadth is compelling, but free usage is limited and paid plans cost more after their first two months.

Key features

Upload video or audio to generate editable, time-coded transcripts, then review captions, translate them, style them, burn them into video, or export SRT, VTT, ASS, and TXT files. Agent localization adds JSON export. Speaker identification and brand caption presets extend the workflow beyond transcription, while support for YouTube, TikTok, Reels, Shorts, podcasts, courses, marketing videos, and news makes it relevant across short- and long-form publishing.

AI subtitle translation covers 100+ languages, and voice dubbing sits alongside transcription, review, and export. Voice-clone slots scale from 3 on Free to 100 on Business. SRTGen names OpenAI, Cartesia, and ElevenLabs for synthetic voices. This breadth suits teams localizing content for multiple audiences; it is harder to justify if all you need is a transcript or subtitle file.

MCP-compatible agent connections include Codex, Claude, Gemini, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Windsurf. SRTGen also offers a REST API, with full developer API access on higher plans. Agent localization supports uploads up to 20 GiB and five subtitle export formats. For videos over 200 MB, its recommended workflow extracts a compact MP3 locally and keeps the original video on the user's computer for final rendering. That approach can help avoid uploading a large original file, but it adds a local preparation step.

Collaborative Workspaces provide email invitations, admin, editor, and viewer roles, shared style templates, unified billing and credit pools, and real-time project synchronization. Plans include 2 GB to 500 GB of secure cloud storage. SRTGen states that files are stored in Backblaze B2, audio processing may involve AssemblyAI, Google Gemini, ElevenLabs, and Cartesia, and personal data is not sold. Security measures include TLS/HTTPS in transit, encrypted storage for sensitive credentials, role-based access, hashed API-key storage after one-time display, signed short-lived sessions, rate limiting, and periodic security reviews. Deleted project files are queued for cloud deletion within 30 days; account deletion schedules permanent file deletion within 90 days, while AI processing logs may be retained for up to two years. Those retention windows matter for teams with strict data policies.

Pricing

SRTGen is freemium, with monthly and yearly billing options; yearly billing states a 25% saving. Non-expiring top-ups are also available. The paid entry price is $4 per month for the first two months, then $8 per month, so budget against the renewal rate rather than the introductory offer.

Free — 0.00 USD per free: A test drive with 20 signup credits, 20 transcription minutes, 40 translation minutes, up to 4k speech characters, 2 GB storage, and SRT, VTT, and TXT export. Recording is limited to five minutes and 720p. With one seat and 3 voice-clone slots, it is useful for evaluating the workflow, not sustained production.
Starter — 4.00 USD per month for the first two months, then $8/mo: 360 credits, 360 transcription minutes, 720 translation minutes, 20 GB storage, 10 voice-clone slots, and one seat. A fit for an individual social creator who needs recurring capacity, but the single seat makes it a poor team plan.
Pro — 14.00 USD per month for the first two months, then $24/mo: 1,500 credits, 1,500 transcription minutes, 3,000 translation minutes, 100 GB storage, 30 voice-clone slots, and three seats. This is the more practical step for localization managers or small teams. Additional seats cost $3.00 per month.
Business — 49.00 USD per month for the first two months, then $69/mo: 5,000 credits, 5,000 transcription minutes, 10,000 translation minutes, 500 GB storage, 100 voice-clone slots, and 10 seats. It is aimed at high-volume brand localization; additional seats cost $3.00 per month.
Overage credits — 1.00 USD per once per 20 Credits: Non-expiring credits can cover work after a plan allowance is exhausted, without requiring a larger recurring tier.
Enterprise — custom pricing: Bulk processing, custom automation pipelines, and dedicated agency services.

Higher plans matter for teams that need more seats and full developer API access. The free and Starter tiers each include one seat; Pro includes three and Business ten. The X Twitter AI Bot allows 3, 60, 300, or 1,500 requests per month by plan.

Platforms

SRTGen supports web and API access, with MCP agent localization for compatible tools. That combination gives builders a route to work through a service interface or connect localization tasks to an agent workflow.

Who it's for

SRTGen is strongest for social creators who need translation and styled captions, and for localization teams that want transcription, dubbing, review, and export together. Its shared workspaces and higher-plan API access also make it relevant to teams integrating localization into recurring processes. A user needing only occasional captions may find the free caps restrictive, while anyone seeking a focused transcript tool may not benefit from the extra localization features.

Pros and cons

Pros: One workflow spans editable transcription, 100+ language translation, dubbing, styling, speaker identification, burn-in, and multiple subtitle exports, reducing the need to split localization tasks across tools.
Pros: MCP agent connections, REST API access on higher plans, and JSON export through agent localization give developers ways to integrate the workflow.
Pros: Team seats, role permissions, shared templates, pooled credits, and synchronized projects support collaborative localization, with storage scaling to 500 GB.
Cons: The free allowance is small, with only 20 transcription minutes, 40 translation minutes, and a five-minute, 720p recording limit; it is chiefly an evaluation tier.
Cons: Starter remains single-seat, and the first-two-month prices increase afterward, so ongoing team use can cost more than the introductory figures suggest.
Cons: Files may involve multiple processing providers, and deletion and log-retention windows extend beyond immediate project removal; organizations with tight retention requirements should account for that.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see AI Video Caption Generators and Subtitle Software.

Captions is another freemium option across Android, iOS, web, and API; its Max plan is 24.99 USD per month and includes 500 credits, AI Edit styles, AI video creation, and digital twins or custom AI actors. Choose it when those creation and actor features matter more than SRTGen's localization workflow.
Checksub is a paid web, extension, and API option with a free plan and trial; its Junior plan is 18.00 USD per month for 2 hours of credits per month, one translation per project, 20GB storage, and a 4GB upload limit. Consider it when that monthly credit allowance and per-project translation structure fit better.
Fluen AI Subtitle Generator supports web, Windows, macOS, extension, and API, with a free plan allowing up to 3 files of up to 90 minutes each and 30-day asset retention. It may suit someone prioritizing longer free file lengths over SRTGen's broader free workflow.
CaptionHub is a paid web, API, and self-hosted option with a free trial and usage-based Creator & Agency pricing at 2.50 USD per month. Consider it when self-hosting or usage-based billing is the deciding factor.
Taption is freemium across web and API, with a Standard free plan showing 0 monthly minutes, a five-hour maximum file length, and a 2 GB maximum file size. It may suit workflows centered on longer individual files rather than recurring free minutes.
Submagic is a web-based freemium option; its Starter plan is 12.00 USD per month billed annually and allows 15 videos per member per month, two-minute videos, AI auto captions, and 1080p export without a watermark. Choose it when those short-video publishing constraints match the job.
Moonshot is a web freemium service whose free plan includes one video, up to two minutes, and 109 transcription languages. It is a simpler alternative for a very small free transcription task.
SmartSub is a free option for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Verdict

Choose SRTGen if you are a creator or localization team that needs transcription, multilingual subtitles, styling, dubbing, and exports in one workflow, especially if agent or API access will connect that work to your stack. Look elsewhere if your requirements are limited to basic captions, or if the free caps and post-introductory monthly rates do not suit your volume or budget.
