Overview

UniTime addresses scheduling as an institutional coordination problem rather than a single timetable task. Its modules cover course planning, exams, event requests, and student placements, with support for room and teacher constraints, automated timetable generation, and conflict detection. That breadth can reduce the need to treat each scheduling function as a separate system.

It can run on its own or interface with an existing student information system. XML imports and exports cover academic, student, course, and timetable data, and additional REST interfaces support data exchange. This makes it a plausible fit for institutions with established systems, though integration still requires planning and administration.

Key features

Course and exam planning

Course timetables can account for demand, curricula, historical patterns, faculty and room preferences, and relationships among classes. That makes UniTime relevant to institutions balancing multiple constraints, not just filling open periods. Its exam module builds term schedules to minimize student conflicts and handles both midterms and finals.

Events and student assignments

The web-based Events interface lets staff and students request events or search for available times and locations, with notices sent to organizers. Student scheduling assigns learners to available class spaces using requirements, historical requests, and timetable data. The important limit is that UniTime does not guarantee every student conflict will be resolved, so assignment results still need institutional oversight.

Deployment and administration

UniTime is a server-client application with a web interface and platform-independent distributions; installation notes cover Linux, Windows, and Mac. Administrators can configure SSL access through Tomcat and integrate LDAP authentication. These options suit institutions prepared to manage a server deployment; teams seeking a fully managed service should compare other products.

Pricing

UniTime — 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is open-source software under the Apache License, Version 2.0, and the license does not impose a stated seat or usage quota. It is the natural starting point for institutions able to install and operate the system themselves. Educational institutions can receive a reasonable amount of free email support, usually within a day or two; additional services are available for a fee. Support beyond that included assistance is therefore not part of the free offer.

Platforms

UniTime supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows environments. Its server-client model and platform-independent distributions offer deployment flexibility, while the web interface gives users browser-based access. The documented installation coverage is specifically Linux, Windows, and Mac.

Who it's for

UniTime is strongest for schools, colleges, and universities coordinating schedules across multiple departments or managers, particularly where course and exam planning need to account for complex constraints. Institutions that want to connect scheduling with student-information data have XML exchange and REST interfaces to work with. It is less suited to a buyer seeking guaranteed conflict-free student assignments or a deployment that avoids server administration.

Pros and cons

Broad scheduling coverage: Course, exam, event, room-sharing, and student-assignment functions serve connected institutional needs in one system.
Constraint-aware automation: Planning can account for demand, curricula, historical patterns, faculty and room preferences, and class relationships.
Open and integrable: The Apache 2.0 license, XML exchange, REST interfaces, and option to run independently or alongside an SIS give institutions flexibility.
Self-hosting requires administration: Server deployment and setup for SSL or LDAP call for technical ownership.
Student conflict resolution is not guaranteed: Assignments to available spaces can still leave conflicts for staff to address.
Production version guidance matters: Version 4.9 is in development; the installation guidance recommends 4.8 for production.

Verdict

Choose UniTime if your institution needs a broad, constraint-aware scheduling system, values open-source software, and can take responsibility for deployment and administration. Its main advantage is the combination of course, exam, event, and student scheduling with integration pathways and no license fee. Look elsewhere if you need guaranteed resolution of student conflicts or want to avoid self-hosted operations; for production, use the recommended 4.8 release.
