Overview

Written in Go and distributed under the MIT license, Dendy takes a command-line approach instead of offering a desktop graphical interface. Desktop play starts by running the emulator with a .nes ROM file. Pre-built binaries are available for Windows, macOS, and Linux; users can also install with Go or build from source.

The feature set reaches beyond basic playback: save states, rewind, screenshots, a CRT-effect toggle, and Game Genie codes are available through command-line options. That makes Dendy appealing to users who value practical play controls and are comfortable managing them without menus. The maker explicitly warns that compatibility and accuracy are not goals on par with established emulators, and some games fail or have issues.

Key features

Desktop netplay

Dendy supports peer-to-peer multiplayer using rollback networking, a meaningful draw for players who want to play NES games remotely. NAT traversal uses a public relay for peer discovery and UDP hole punching; it will not work when both players are behind symmetric NATs. The maker hosts a relay and says users can build and run their own relay binary if needed, which gives technically inclined groups an alternative but not a guarantee that every network setup will connect.

Controls and play options

Player one can use a keyboard or a detected gamepad, and a mouse can emulate the Zapper light gun. Save states and rewind help manage play sessions, while screenshots, CRT effects, and Game Genie codes add options for capture and experimentation. These controls are useful, but the command-line interface remains the entry point rather than a desktop menu system.

Sound and compatibility

Sound emulation is still in progress and may produce pops and crackles. Combined with the stated compatibility limits, that makes Dendy a less suitable choice for players seeking accurate, consistent reproduction across a broad game collection.

Pricing

Dendy is free, with a free plan and no free trial. There are no paid plans or seat-based terms to weigh; the practical tradeoff is accepting the emulator's compatibility and audio limitations in exchange for no software charge.

Platforms

Dendy runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with pre-built binaries as well as Go installation and source-build routes. A WebAssembly version also runs in modern browsers, but it does not support netplay. Choose the desktop version if multiplayer is essential; the browser edition is the option for users who prefer launching it in a browser and can do without online play.

The project uses Raylib Go bindings for graphics and audio and kcp-go for netplay. The repository identifies the license as MIT.

Who it's for

Dendy suits technically comfortable NES players who want command-line control, rewind and save-state options, and desktop rollback netplay. It is less appropriate for newcomers who want a graphical library, or for players whose priority is broad game compatibility and clean sound.

Pros and cons

Pro: Rollback peer-to-peer netplay gives desktop players a concrete multiplayer option.
Pro: A hosted relay, with the option to build and run a relay binary, can help players connect across NATs.
Pro: Save states, rewind, screenshots, CRT effects, and Game Genie codes provide useful play and customization controls.
Con: The desktop emulator has no GUI, so users must launch it from the command line with a ROM file.
Con: Netplay is unavailable in the browser version, and NAT traversal fails when both players are behind symmetric NATs.
Con: Some games may not run correctly, and sound can produce pops and crackles.

puNES is a free alternative for Linux and Windows.
Jnes is a free-to-download Windows alternative that cannot be sold or distributed through commercial channels.
KuroganeNES is a free web-based alternative.
binjnes is a free alternative for Linux, macOS, and the web, with web and build-from-source versions.
HalfNES is a free alternative for Linux, macOS, and Windows; it has no savestates and requires Java 8 or newer.

Verdict

Choose Dendy if you want a free, command-line NES emulator with desktop rollback netplay and useful session controls. Look elsewhere if reliable compatibility, cleaner sound, a graphical desktop interface, or browser-based multiplayer matters more.
