Overview

Snyk Open Source is a software composition analysis product for identifying and addressing vulnerabilities and license issues in open-source dependencies. It suits developer teams that want dependency checks in their existing coding and delivery workflows, with policy reporting also useful to security and GRC teams.

Its strongest case is the breadth of coverage from IDEs through ongoing monitoring, paired with prioritization and automated remediation. The Free plan’s five-project ceiling and Team’s ten-developer limit make growth a buying consideration, and Rust support is limited.

Key features

Snyk checks dependencies in IDEs and the CLI, scans pull requests before merge, adds guardrails to CI/CD pipelines, and keeps monitoring projects for newly identified vulnerabilities. That spread helps teams address dependency risk during development and after deployment rather than relying on a single review point. Registry scanning and SBOM generation add supply-chain visibility, while image scanning and Kubernetes, Terraform, and CloudFormation analysis widen its scope. It does not provide runtime protection, so teams needing that capability will need another control.

Risk prioritization considers reachability, exploit maturity, and EPSS/CVSS scores, with business and application context available to refine decisions. This gives teams more basis for ordering remediation than a vulnerability count alone. Snyk can generate pull requests with required upgrades and patches, and customizable templates let organizations set titles, descriptions, and commit messages; that can reduce friction in remediation workflows, though teams still need to manage the proposed changes.

Continuous evaluation against internal and regulatory policies is supported by real-time and historical reporting. Customizable license policies and automated enforcement help teams govern open-source use across projects, making the product relevant beyond developers to security engineers and GRC teams. Integrations include GitHub, Jira, Bitbucket Server, and IntelliJ.

Supported ecosystems include C/C++, Dart and Flutter, Elixir, Go, Java and Kotlin, JavaScript, .NET, PHP, Python, Ruby, Scala, Swift and Objective-C, and TypeScript, alongside package tools such as npm, pnpm, Yarn, Maven, Gradle, Pip, Poetry, pipenv, and setup.py. Rust support is limited, a meaningful gap for teams with Rust dependencies.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes Snyk Open Source (SCA) for up to five projects. It is a sensible starting point for an individual or small team evaluating dependency analysis, but the project cap limits its use as a broad portfolio control.

Team costs 25.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes up to 10 developers, 100 projects, Snyk Open Source, Jira integration, and next business day support. The jump from five to 100 projects gives a development team more room to operationalize scanning, but the ten-developer ceiling makes it a poor fit for larger groups.

Enterprise has custom pricing. Credits apply across Snyk capabilities, with Open Source priced at one credit per active contributor per day. That model may suit organizations buying across capabilities, but teams should evaluate contributor activity and credit needs before choosing it.

Platforms

Snyk Open Source is available across API, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows environments, with a hybrid deployment model and cloud deployment option. IDE integration, CI/CD integration, pull-request scanning, and source-code analysis align it with teams that want checks embedded in their development stack.

Who it's for

Developer teams that need dependency checks from coding through CI/CD and ongoing project monitoring are the clearest fit, particularly when automated fixes and license controls can be folded into existing review processes. Security engineers and GRC teams can also use its policy evaluation and reporting. Teams requiring runtime protection, substantial Rust coverage, or plans beyond the stated Free and Team project and developer limits should assess other tools or an Enterprise arrangement.

Pros and cons

Pros: Scanning spans IDEs, CLI, pull requests, CI/CD, and continuous monitoring, helping teams address risk across the development lifecycle.
Pros: Reachability-informed prioritization and generated remediation pull requests give teams useful ways to focus and act on dependency findings.
Pros: License policy enforcement and historical as well as real-time reporting extend its value to governance work.
Cons: Free covers only five projects, while Team is capped at 100 projects and 10 developers, which can constrain adoption as usage grows.
Cons: Rust support is limited, and the lack of runtime protection leaves a gap for teams seeking runtime defense.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison of dependency analysis products, see Software Composition Analysis Software. Teams focused on image risk can compare Container Image Scanning Tools or Container Security Software; infrastructure-as-code needs are covered by Infrastructure as Code Security Software. For code analysis beyond dependencies, consider SAST Tools or Static Analysis Tools.

Mondoo CSPM is worth considering when a free forever option for cloud, Kubernetes, OS, SaaS, and API scanning is the priority; it also offers a Kubernetes operator and extensible provider system. Sysdig Secure may suit teams evaluating a paid security platform licensed by the number of hosts in their environment. Checkmarx API Security is an alternative for teams seeking SAST, SCA, API security, and ASPM together, with additional modules available as add-ons.

Qualys External Attack Surface Management offers a 30-day no-cost CSAM with EASM trial for teams evaluating external attack surface management. Uptycs Container Security may fit workload security buyers who can meet its $12K annual minimum order. Google Artifact Analysis is an option for teams looking for per-scan container or language package scanning. ZeroPath may suit teams seeking unlimited repositories and scans across SAST, SCA, secrets, and IaC scanning, starting at $1,000/mo plus $60/dev. Docker Desktop is another freemium option for teams whose needs center on Docker Desktop and its Docker Scout-enabled repository allowance.

Verdict

Snyk Open Source is a strong choice for development teams that want dependency risk management integrated from IDE and pull-request checks through CI/CD and continuous monitoring, with policy controls available for governance teams. Its prioritization and automated remediation make that coverage actionable. Look elsewhere if runtime protection or full Rust support is essential, and check project and developer limits carefully before standardizing on Free or Team.
