Overview

GSBS is a self-hosted service for syncing and backing up game saves across Windows, Linux, and macOS devices. It is best suited to players managing saves across a mixed-device setup, including a Steam Deck, who are comfortable running a central server. Its game-aware syncing and manual version restore make it more tailored to game saves than basic file syncing, but the server requires care if save privacy matters.

Key features

Sync built around games

Clients discover games from Steam, Epic, GOG, Ubisoft, EA, Xbox, Heroic, Lutris, Bottles, and Prism using a PCGamingWiki manifest. They defer syncing while a detected game is running, reducing the chance of changing a live save. GSBS also translates save paths between Windows and Linux, including Proton paths, a practical advantage for PC and Steam Deck combinations.

Versioned saves and recovery

GSBS keeps versions of save files and lets users restore them manually through its web dashboard. That provides a clear recovery path after an unwanted change, while keeping the user responsible for selecting the version to restore.

Encryption and backups

Optional end-to-end encryption uses client-side AES-256-GCM with Argon2id; encrypted saves reach the server as ciphertext. Without encryption, save contents are plaintext on the server and in backups, so enabling it matters when server or backup access should not expose saves. Scheduled tar.zst snapshots can include the database, keys, and saves, with storage on local disk or S3. S3 also supports offsite backup, and webhook, Discord, and ntfy notifications cover conflicts, quota, new devices, backups, and stale devices.

API, deployment, and security

The web UI provides an OpenAPI specification at /api/openapi.json, useful for teams integrating the service into their own workflows. Docker Compose is the recommended server deployment path, and a Windows server setup executable is also provided. Clients run on Windows, Linux—including Flatpak and arm64—or macOS. The project uses the MIT License. One security trade-off is that installers and binaries are not code-signed or notarized; the security policy directs vulnerability reports privately to the maintainer and says they are acknowledged within 72 hours.

Pricing

GSBS is free, with a free plan and no paid tiers described. There is no stated seat or quota figure to weigh against a team’s needs, so the decision is less about subscription cost than the effort of operating a central server and managing its storage and backups. Because the service supports multi-user, multi-device setups, it can serve households or teams, but the free positioning does not remove that operational responsibility.

Platforms

GSBS covers Windows, Linux, and macOS clients, with Linux support including Flatpak and arm64. Its web interface and API complement those clients, while the server is self-hosted. This breadth suits cross-platform save workflows; it is not a cloud service that removes the need to deploy and maintain a server.

Who it's for

Choose GSBS if you move between desktop, laptop, and Steam Deck, want game-aware syncing rather than syncing active saves, or need versioned saves with manual web restore. It is also a fit for technically comfortable users who want scheduled local or S3 snapshots and optional client-side encryption. Look elsewhere if you want a managed service without server administration, or if you need signed installers and notarized binaries.

Pros and cons

Pro: Game detection and deferred syncing reduce interference with saves while a game is running.
Pro: Windows/Linux path translation, including Proton, helps mixed-platform users keep saves aligned.
Pro: Version history, manual web restore, and scheduled snapshots provide multiple recovery options.
Pro: Optional end-to-end encryption keeps encrypted save contents from being readable by the server.
Con: Unencrypted saves remain plaintext on the server and in backups, so privacy depends on enabling encryption.
Con: Self-hosting requires a central server and storage management rather than a fully managed sync service.
Con: Installers and binaries are not code-signed or notarized, a consideration for cautious deployment.

Alternatives

See Game Save Managers for the broader category. EmuSync is another free option with Linux and Windows platforms if macOS support is not needed. Ludusavi is a free, MIT-licensed portable executable for Windows, Linux, or Mac for users who prefer that distribution model. Checkpoint64 has a free tier capped at 20 MiB per space, one team, three joined friends’ teams, and three read-only fans; its €5.00 EUR per month Pro plan may suit readers who want those team-oriented limits expanded, though GSBS has no published quota figures to compare directly. Game Backup Monitor is free and open source, supports unlimited games and 7-Zip compression, and may fit Windows/Linux users who can supply a cloud provider and sync client themselves. Game Save Genie is free, supports self-hosting and uses the user’s own cloud storage, an alternative for those who want to bring their storage provider. Game Save Manager is a Windows-only freemium option with a free GitHub release under GPL-3.0. Gamekeeper is a Windows freemium alternative whose free tier limits Multi-Space to three per game and supports several storage protocols. Hoard is another freemium option for Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosting.

Verdict

GSBS is a strong choice for players who need cross-platform game-save sync, particularly across Windows/Linux or PC and Steam Deck, and value game-aware syncing, version history, and scheduled backups. Its central server and focused recovery features are the main reasons to choose it; server administration, plaintext saves unless encryption is enabled, and unsigned, unnotarized binaries are the reasons to look elsewhere.
