Overview

nwipe is a Linux tool for securely erasing whole block devices, from a command line or an ncurses interface. It fits administrators and technically capable users who need to wipe disks in parallel and choose an erase method. Its breadth is a strength, but hardware sanitization is interactive and a required runtime dependency narrows its fit for automated workflows.

Key features

Erase choices include zero and one fills, DoD and Gutmann methods, verification passes, and BMB21-2019. Random-pattern methods can use selectable generators, including AES-256-CTR and ChaCha20. This range lets teams align a wipe to their process, but requires choosing the method rather than relying on a single default.

For supported drives, the GUI offers ATA and NVMe hardware-native block erase, cryptographic scramble, and pattern overwrite. These sanitize options cannot be batched with automated multi-drive commands such as autonuke, making them a poor fit for unattended jobs that depend on hardware sanitization. Legacy ATA Secure Erase and freeze-lock handling are unsupported.

I/O can run in automatic, direct, or cached mode; automatic mode falls back to cached I/O when direct I/O is unsupported. That accommodates devices without direct-I/O support. Parallel operation is another practical advantage: the project illustrates six drives being erased at once.

nwipe can produce a three-page PDF certificate, with SMART data when smartmontools and dmidecode are installed. Those utilities are optional recommended tools, while hdparm is required at runtime. Teams should account for that dependency when preparing the systems that will run nwipe.

Pricing

nwipe is free: its plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is licensed under GNU GPL version 2.0. There is no paid tier or free trial. The plan provides command-line and ncurses interfaces for Linux; it does not require a per-seat or per-wipe purchase.

Platforms

nwipe requires Linux and supports wiping disks, including SSDs and removable media. Bootable media is available through ShredOS, which bundles nwipe for x86_64 and i686 systems with legacy BIOS and UEFI support. The project also points to distributions that include nwipe, such as netboot.xyz, DiskDump, Parted Magic, SystemRescue, GParted Live, and Grml.

The tool descends from dwipe, originally used by Darik's Boot and Nuke, and was created to bring that erase engine to Linux distributions with newer hardware support. Its repository welcomes bug reports, feature requests, and pull requests; reports should include distribution, nwipe version, hardware details, logs, and command-line options.

Who it's for

Choose nwipe when you need a free Linux utility for whole-drive erasure, want several methods and verification, or need to process multiple disks in parallel. It is less suitable if hardware sanitize must run unattended or through automated multi-drive commands, or if your workflow depends on legacy ATA Secure Erase.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple overwrite and verification methods let operators match erase procedures to their requirements.
Pros: Parallel operation and bootable ShredOS support make it practical for batches of disks without requiring a conventional desktop workflow.
Pros: PDF certificates provide an erasure record, with SMART data when recommended tools are installed.
Cons: Hardware sanitize is GUI-only and cannot be batched with autonuke, limiting automation.
Cons: hdparm is a runtime requirement, and legacy ATA Secure Erase with freeze-lock handling is unsupported.

Alternatives

Active@ KillDisk is worth considering if you need Linux, macOS, or Windows support and a freemium option; its listed personal licenses cost 64.95 USD per once and 79.95 USD per once.

DriveWipe is another free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with no free trial. File Shredder is a free Windows choice when file and folder shredding or free-space wiping matters more than nwipe's Linux whole-disk focus. CBL Data Shredder is a free Windows alternative for low-level drive formatting and customizable sector wipes.

Strix Disk Cleaner may suit users seeking free, open-source disk cleaning on Windows or Linux with offline operation. ASCOMP Secure Eraser is a Windows freemium alternative, with its Professional Edition — Private License priced at 29.90 USD per once for up to two systems. BCWipe Total WipeOut is a paid alternative for Linux, macOS, and Windows with a free trial. Blancco Drive Eraser is a paid Linux and Windows option with a free trial and certified erasure.

Verdict

nwipe is a strong fit for Linux operators who need free, parallel whole-disk erasure with selectable methods and certificate output. Its combination of command-line operation, ncurses controls, and bootable distribution support makes it especially useful for disk-wiping workflows. Look elsewhere when hardware sanitization must be automated or legacy ATA Secure Erase is essential.
