Overview

HeyGen is an AI video creation platform for people and teams turning text, media, or presentations into avatar-led and other videos. It suits creators who need multilingual avatar content and a choice of source formats; the trade-off is that monthly video and credit limits make plan selection important for ongoing production.

Its mix of editable output, collaboration, and API access gives it scope beyond occasional clip generation. But the free allowance is small, and longer videos, 4K exports, and team administration sit behind higher tiers.

Key features

HeyGen generates video from text, images, audio, and PPT or PDF files, and includes AI avatars. That breadth is useful when production begins with varied source material rather than a single script format. Lip-sync and translation support more than 175 languages and dialects, making the platform relevant to teams adapting presenter-led material for multiple markets.

In AI Studio, generated motion elements can be adjusted for text, color, timing, and layout. That gives creators room to refine a result instead of treating generation as a one-way export. HeyGen says many videos are ready within a minute, while complex ones may take a few minutes.

Comments, tagging, multi-user editing, workspace collaboration, and task management support shared production. Business and Enterprise add centralized billing, roles, SSO, and SCIM provisioning; Business also integrates with n8n, Make, HubSpot, Zapier, and LMS platforms. API access and a ChatGPT plugin extend the ways teams can connect the service to their workflows.

Paid plans include live chat support, while Enterprise adds priority support and customer success management. HeyGen identifies GDPR, SOC 2 Type II, CCPA, AI Act, and DPF compliance markers, and says it conducts annual penetration testing alongside vulnerability management and continuous monitoring. Custom avatars require identity verification on camera by the person depicted, an important safeguard for teams commissioning likenesses.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and allows three videos per month, each up to one minute. It also includes 500+ stock video avatars and one custom video avatar. That is enough to explore the workflow, but the small monthly quota and one-minute ceiling are a poor fit for steady publishing. HeyGen also offers a no-credit-card trial with limited premium-feature access.

Creator costs 29.00 USD per month billed monthly, or 24.00 USD per month billed annually. Both include 600 credits per month; Creator allows videos up to 30 minutes, exports at 1080p, and supports 175+ languages and dialects. The annual rate lowers the monthly price but commits the subscription for a year. This tier fits individual creators who can work within 1080p and 600 credits.

Pro costs 49.00 USD per month billed monthly and raises the allowance to 1,000 credits, with videos up to 30 minutes and 4K export. It is the clearer fit when image resolution matters or Creator's credit pool is insufficient.

Business costs 149.00 USD per month and includes 1,500 credits, videos up to 60 minutes, and 4K export. Additional seats cost $20 per seat per month, so teams should account for seat charges beyond the base plan. Its integrations and administrative controls make it better suited to shared business workflows than the individual tiers.

Enterprise has custom pricing, no maximum video duration, 4K export, SCIM provisioning, and priority support. It is aimed at organizations needing enterprise administration and support rather than a fixed self-serve package. On cancellation, renewal stops, but paid features and credits remain available until the billing cycle ends.

Platforms

HeyGen is available on Android, iOS, and web, with API access. Cloud and mobile deployment cover both browser-based production and mobile use; teams building a more integrated workflow can also use the API.

Who it's for

HeyGen is a strong fit for solo creators and teams making localized training, marketing, or presentation videos from different source formats, particularly when avatar lip-sync and translation are central. Its collaborative editing and enterprise controls serve larger teams, though Business seat charges and Enterprise custom pricing call for closer budget planning. It is less suitable for recurring high-volume output on a tight budget: Free is capped at three short videos monthly, while paid usage is governed by credits.

Pros and cons

Pros: Input options span text, images, audio, and presentations, reducing friction when source materials vary.
Pros: Support for more than 175 languages and dialects combines lip-sync and translation for localization workflows.
Pros: Editable motion elements and multi-user collaboration leave room for refinement and shared review.
Cons: Free users get only three videos a month, capped at one minute each.
Cons: Creator exports at 1080p; 4K starts at Pro, while Business adds a $20 monthly charge for each extra seat.
Cons: Credit quotas remain on paid tiers, and Enterprise pricing is custom, complicating budget comparisons for larger deployments.

Alternatives

For a narrower choice, compare the AI Explainer Video Makers, AI video generators, AI Avatar Video Software, Video Localization Software, AI Dubbing Software, and AI Avatar Generators collections.

mySimpleshow is another freemium option, with three monthly video renderings on its Free plan. AI Studios offers a free plan with three one-minute videos, one custom avatar, and 720p export. Colossyan has a free Starter plan with 20 minutes per month, 15 custom avatars, and one editor. GreenOnion AI is an alternative with a Creator plan priced at 19.00 USD per month. Synthesia provides a free Basic plan with 1,200 credits per month and 10 minutes of video per month. Wondercraft has a free plan with 150 credits and 720p export. Elai.io offers a free plan with one-minute videos, 80+ avatars, and 75+ languages. D-ID is another option to consider.

Verdict

Choose HeyGen if your workflow depends on avatar-led video, broad localization, and editable collaborative output across several input types. Its main advantage is that breadth in one platform; look elsewhere if you need consistently high volume at low cost, or if a 1080p Creator export is not enough and Pro's higher price is hard to justify.
