Overview

Pact is a code-first contract-testing toolkit for HTTP and messaging integrations, best suited to developer teams that own both sides of a service relationship. It can catch mismatches before a full system deployment, but teams take on Broker operations if they need shared contract workflows.

Key features

Automated consumer tests create contracts that capture concrete interactions with providers. Each application can then be verified in isolation against those expectations, which helps teams surface compatibility issues earlier than end-to-end deployment checks. This model works best when consumer and provider teams can coordinate and keep the contracts meaningful; it is a weaker fit when many consumers cannot maintain direct relationships with a provider team.

The CLI includes mock and stub servers, a provider verifier, a Broker client and a plugin CLI. The verifier supports HTTP plus synchronous and asynchronous messages, while plugins add formats including gRPC, Avro and CSV. Message testing is decoupled from queue technology, with documented examples spanning ActiveMQ, RabbitMQ, SNS, SQS, Kafka and Kinesis.

The Broker stores and shares contracts and verification results, and its compatibility checks can indicate whether application versions are safe to deploy together. That makes it useful in CI/CD pipelines for independently changing services. The tradeoff is operational ownership: the open-source Broker is self-hosted, so its operator handles security, upgrades and maintenance.

Implementations cover more than 10 languages, including JavaScript, Java and JVM languages, .NET, Go, Python, Swift and Objective-C, Ruby, PHP, C++, Rust and Scala. Documentation recipes cover scenarios and tools such as GraphQL, Cypress, Jest, Mocha, Kafka, AWS Lambda and API Gateway, giving teams several routes into existing stacks.

Pricing

The open-source Pact tooling costs 0.00 USD per free. It is the natural starting point for teams willing to host and operate a Broker separately; the software does not remove that infrastructure responsibility.

PactFlow Starter is 0.00 USD per free and includes unlimited users, 2 integrations and bi-directional contract testing. The cap on integrations makes it better suited to a small setup than a broad portfolio. PactFlow Team (yearly) costs 115.42 USD per month, billed yearly as $1,385; PactFlow Team (monthly) costs 127.00 USD per month. Both include 50 integrations, community support, bi-directional contract testing, GitHub and Google Login, and a 14-day free trial. The yearly option lowers the monthly equivalent but commits the buyer to annual billing; monthly billing costs more per month.

PactFlow Enterprise has custom pricing and includes advanced user and security management, dedicated support, and SaaS or on-premise deployment. PactFlow positions SSO, API tokens, audit trails and secrets as premium features; its Enterprise plan includes SAML single sign-on and role-based access management. PactFlow describes encryption at rest with AES-256, TLS 1.2 or higher, and storage of data and backups in AWS Sydney. These are PactFlow offerings, not core Pact capabilities.

Platforms

Pact supports API workflows and runs across Linux, macOS and Windows, with self-hosted options. It has CI/CD integration and GraphQL support. Pact's documentation, Slack community and partner network provide support routes.

Who it's for

Choose Pact when developers can maintain consumer-provider relationships and want a shared, code-driven way to verify integration assumptions before deployment. Look elsewhere for performance or load testing, provider functional testing, or environments where consumers cannot coordinate directly with provider teams.

Pros and cons

Pros: Consumer-generated contracts let each side verify integration expectations in isolation, reducing dependence on deploying the entire system for compatibility checks.
Pros: Broad language coverage, protocol plugins and queue-agnostic message testing can accommodate varied service stacks.
Cons: Shared open-source workflows require a self-hosted Broker, leaving security, maintenance and upgrades to the operator.
Cons: Pact is not intended for load testing or provider functional testing, and its approach depends on direct collaboration between consumer and provider teams.

Alternatives

Microcks is a free, open-source, community-driven CNCF Incubating project for teams considering another open-source option. For the wider category, compare Contract Testing Tools, Integration Testing Tools, API Testing Tools and API Design Tools.

Pact Broker is a related option for teams focused on the Broker component. Confluent Cloud, GraphQL Hive, Karapace, Karate, oasdiff and PactFlow are other options to consider.

Verdict

Pact is a strong choice for developer-led teams that control both consumer and provider code and need to catch integration incompatibilities before deployment. Its language and messaging breadth are compelling; choose another approach if the team cannot operate a self-hosted Broker or needs load or provider functional testing.
