Overview

Removal.AI combines automatic background removal with browser editing, desktop batch tools, and an API. It is a strong fit for teams handling repeated image cutouts across production workflows, while occasional users can start with a small personal-use allowance. The main trade-off is that meaningful commercial or higher-resolution work requires credits.

Key features

Removal.AI can create transparent, white, or customized backgrounds in three seconds or less. Its web editor also supports background changes, text, effects, and manual foreground cleanup with a background eraser. That makes it more useful than a one-step cutout tool when an image needs simple finishing, though it is not a substitute for a full image editor.

Bulk Upload supports batches of up to 100 images and uses half the credits per image. The service also says it can process over 1,000 images in a single upload; for large recurring jobs, clarify which workflow and limits apply before building around that capacity. The macOS and Windows desktop app handles whole folders, background colors, pause and resume, ecommerce optimization, and automatic cropping. Those features favor catalog and repeat-batch work over one-off edits.

The API accepts uploaded files or image URLs and returns either a file URL or Base64 output, with output up to 25 megapixels. Documentation examples cover Python, PHP, C#, JavaScript, and Nodejs. New API users receive 10 free preview credits per month by default; the documented theoretical rate is up to 500 images per minute, depending on resolution and internet speed. A Figma plugin extends background removal into Figma workflows.

Uploads can be JPG or PNG up to 12 MB. Images above 36 megapixels are resized to that maximum resolution. The homepage claims GDPR-compliant file storage and a 99% uptime guarantee. Support is English-only, with responses promised within 24 hours.

Pricing

The free plan is free and allows 3 images per month at 0.25 megapixels for personal use only; commercial use is not included. That is enough for evaluation or occasional personal edits, not a business pipeline. The service's maximum output resolution is 25 megapixels, but free users should expect the stated 0.25-megapixel cap.

Lifetime credit packs are one-time payments, with credits usable within 3 years: 3 credits for 1.89 USD per month, 25 for 8.99 USD per month, 150 for 45.99 USD per month, 350 for 95.99 USD per month, or 800 for 189.99 USD per month. These suit irregular workloads that can plan around a finite balance and its three-year window. The displayed monthly equivalent should not obscure the one-time billing.

Monthly subscriptions include 100 credits for 5.99 USD per month, 450 for 25.99 USD per month, 1150 for 63.99 USD per month, or 2800 for 120.90 USD per month. Unused credits roll over up to five times the monthly budget, making these better suited to recurring work with variable demand. Subscriptions have a 14-day money-back guarantee, restricted to 50 downloads. No seat allowance is stated, so teams should confirm how access is handled before committing.

Platforms

Removal.AI is available on the web and on macOS and Windows, with API access for integration. The desktop option is the practical choice for folder-based work; the API fits automated pipelines, and the Figma plugin supports design workflows. Android and iOS apps are not among its supported platforms.

Who it's for

Photographers, marketers, ecommerce operators, and individuals can use the editor and batch tools for cutouts and background changes. Developers have a usable integration path through file or URL input and several language examples. It is less suitable for businesses that need commercial use without buying credits, teams that require mobile apps, or workflows that depend on a guaranteed output above 25 megapixels.

Pros and cons

Pros: Web, desktop, and API workflows let teams choose between individual edits, folders, and automation.
Pros: Bulk Upload handles up to 100 images at half-credit cost per image, which can lower the cost of repeat batches.
Pros: The editor includes background, text, effects, and manual eraser tools for basic finishing.
Cons: The free plan is limited to 3 images monthly, 0.25 megapixels, and personal use, excluding commercial production.
Cons: JPG and PNG uploads stop at 12 MB, and oversized images are resized, constraints that may interrupt higher-resolution workflows.
Cons: Support is English-only, which may not work for teams needing another support language.

Verdict

Choose Removal.AI if your work spans browser edits, desktop batches, and API-based background removal, especially when bulk processing can reduce credit use. Its free tier is too constrained for commercial work, and upload-size and resolution ceilings deserve a check against your source files. If those limits or platform gaps do not fit your workflow, compare an alternative before settling on a recurring credit plan.
