Overview

Provenance supports more than 38 console systems spanning Atari, Nintendo, Sega, and Sony. Its library can automatically add box art, screenshots, release information, ratings, and scanned manuals, giving large collections useful context rather than leaving players to sort through bare file names.

The breadth is a real advantage for Apple users who want one frontend across several systems, but it does not mean every system will run well on every device. Some supported systems have device-specific performance limitations, so compatibility with the hardware in hand matters more than the headline system count.

Key features

Emulation and library tools

The free emulation feature set includes save states, cheats, fast forward, shaders, visual filters, controller support, RetroAchievements, and multiplayer. That makes the free tier useful beyond basic playback, particularly for players who value flexible presentation or want to revisit difficult sections. BIOS files are required, so users should be prepared to provide them where applicable.

Nearly all CD-based cores support CHD disc images, and the native Mednafen core has a custom CHD implementation. This is a practical plus for players whose disc libraries use that format.

Apple integration and privacy

Provenance supports native tvOS, Apple TV TopShelf, Siri Remote, Spotlight search, Siri shortcuts, and iCloud sync. Apple TV support also covers MFi, Xbox, and PlayStation gamepads, making the platform fit more than handheld play. The privacy policy says the apps do not collect personal or identifying information, although anonymous device-model and iOS-version analytics may be recorded.

Pricing

Provenance is freemium, but the purchase route affects what is free. The Free plan is 0.00 USD per free and includes all emulation features when sideloaded or built from source. Monthly is $3.99 per month, billed $3.99 /month; Annual is $39.99 per year, billed $39.99 /year; and Lifetime is $99.99 per once, billed $99.99 one-time. Each paid plan adds Plus features and Family Sharing.

Plus adds iCloud sync and priority support. Family Sharing covers up to six members, which makes a paid plan more relevant to a household than to a solo user who only wants the emulator features. The annual and lifetime options trade recurring billing for a larger upfront commitment; the free sideloaded or source-built route is the better fit if those Plus benefits are not worth paying for. Beta access through Patreon is separate from Plus.

Platforms

Provenance supports iOS and macOS, with native tvOS support. Installation is available through the App Store, sideloading with AltStore or SideStore, or building from source. Those routes give technically inclined users options beyond the store, while sideloading and source builds are the paths tied to the stated free plan. The project publishes its source on GitHub under a BSD license.

Who it's for

Provenance is best for Apple users who want a single frontend for a broad retro collection, value Apple TV and controller integration, and are comfortable supplying required BIOS files. It is less suitable when a particular system must run reliably on a specific device: the maker acknowledges performance limits for some system-and-device combinations.

Pros and cons

Pro: Support for more than 38 systems reduces the need to maintain separate frontends across a varied collection.
Pro: The free emulation tools include save states, cheats, shaders, RetroAchievements, and multiplayer, rather than reserving these capabilities for Plus.
Pro: Apple TV features and support for MFi, Xbox, and PlayStation controllers extend the experience to the living room.
Con: Some systems have performance limitations on certain devices, making hardware compatibility an important qualification.
Con: iCloud sync and priority support require Plus, despite the free availability of emulation features.
Con: BIOS files are required, adding setup work before play.

Alternatives

Choose RetroArch if broader platform coverage matters more than Provenance's Apple-specific integration: it is free and open source across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows, and the project dates to 2012. For a focused Game Boy Advance emulator, mGBA is a free, open-source option for Linux, macOS, and Windows; RustBoyAdvance-NG is another free, MIT-licensed emulator and debugger, with Android, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows support. VisualBoyAdvance-M is also free and covers Game Boy and Game Boy Advance on Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows.

For a free open-source multi-system emulator on Linux, macOS, or Windows, consider ares. Delta is another freemium option for iOS and macOS. If browser access is the priority, gbajs3 runs in a modern browser and is freely licensed; Hemulator is a free community project for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with users supplying their own legally obtained ROM files.

For narrower system-specific options, see Game Boy Advance Emulators, Sega CD Emulators, Game Gear Emulators, TurboGrafx-16 Emulators, Nintendo 64 Emulators, and SNES Emulators.

Verdict

Choose Provenance if you use Apple devices and want a broad, feature-rich retro library with Apple TV support and free core emulation tools. Its main advantage is the combination of system breadth and Apple integration; look elsewhere if your priority is guaranteed performance across particular hardware or a platform outside Apple's ecosystem.
