Overview

Rclone is a free, open-source utility for operating on files across cloud storage from the command line, scripts, or an API. It is best suited to technically capable users who need to move, synchronise, back up, or mount data across providers. Its breadth and automation options are compelling; those who want a polished desktop app or encryption that conceals all file metadata should look elsewhere.

Key features

With more than 70 storage integrations, including Amazon S3, Google Drive, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, and Backblaze B2, rclone can connect workflows that would otherwise require provider-specific tools. It handles changed-file copies, one-way sync, and two-way bisync, as well as backup, restore, migration, and mounting. Hash checks using MD5 and SHA1, timestamp preservation, and restartable operations help make long-running transfers more dependable. When supported by the providers involved, server-side transfers reduce local bandwidth and avoid routing data through local disk.

Rclone can mount local, cloud, and virtual filesystems as disks, and serve files over SFTP, HTTP, WebDAV, FTP, and DLNA. Virtual backends add operations such as encryption, compression, chunking, hashing, and combining remotes. Shell pipelines, dry runs, scripts, and an API make it a flexible component in automated stacks. The trade-off is an interface centered on commands rather than a conventional file manager; its web-based GUI is experimental.

The crypt remote encrypts file contents locally before upload and decrypts them after download, with file and directory names encrypted by default. Content encryption uses NaCl SecretBox, based on XSalsa20 and Poly1305. But crypt does not hide file length or modification time, and its password is only lightly obscured in the configuration file. Configuration encryption is important when that file cannot be kept secure.

Pricing

Rclone is a free, open-source project maintained by volunteers and Nick Craig-Wood. Its rclone plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes drive mounting, folder synchronisation, and scheduled synchronisation. There is no free trial because the project is free; no mobile app is included. The project also describes a friendly support community and provides a forum. Business sponsorship can include support contracts, advertising deals, and consultancy.

Platforms

Rclone supports Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, Plan 9, Solaris, and Android. Android builds are available, but are not yet first-class builds. For release v1.75.1, the minimum requirements are Linux kernel 3.2, macOS 12 Monterey, and Windows 10 or Server 2016. The ability to mount storage is useful when a workflow needs cloud files presented as a disk, but the command-oriented model remains a poor fit for users expecting a dedicated mobile app.

Who it's for

Rclone suits developers, administrators, and teams that need scriptable access to multiple storage providers, especially for transfers, backup jobs, migrations, or mounts. It is less suitable for people who need a polished graphical file manager or who require encryption to conceal file sizes and modification times.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad provider support and server-side transfers can simplify multi-cloud workflows while reducing local bandwidth use.
Pros: Hash checks, timestamp preservation, and restartable operations are practical safeguards for large or interrupted transfers.
Pros: Mounting, serving, virtual backends, scripting, and an API give technical teams several ways to fit rclone into existing systems.
Cons: The experimental GUI and command-line focus make it a weaker choice for users seeking a polished point-and-click experience.
Cons: Crypt leaves file length and modification time exposed, while its configuration password needs configuration encryption for stronger protection.
Cons: Android builds are not first-class, and there is no mobile app.

Alternatives

For managed backup options, BDRCloud is a freemium alternative with a free trial and Windows, macOS, Linux, web, API, and self-hosted support; choose it if that platform mix and a subscription-based offering suit your stack better. IDrive is another freemium option with a free plan and trial across desktop, web, Android, and iOS; its plans include a 10 GB Basic tier and a 100 GB, one-user IDrive Mini plan at 0.25 USD per month.

Jottacloud offers a 5 GB, one-user free plan and a free trial, with Android and iOS apps alongside desktop clients, making it an option when consumer-facing mobile coverage matters. Duplicati provides a free tier for Linux, macOS, and Windows that monitors up to two machines and shows the last 200 backups; it is worth considering when those monitoring limits fit the need. MSP360 Backup has a free personal-workstation plan with file and image-based backup and forum support, so it is a more focused alternative for workstation backup.

Veeam Agent for Mac has a free edition limited to one backup job and no direct object-storage backup, which may suit a single-job Mac setup. Synology Active Backup for SaaS is a free add-on for Synology NAS covering Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. Bareos offers a free open-source community edition with public repository access and complete source code. For directory browsing, compare Cloud Backup Services, File transfer services, and WebDAV Client Software.

Verdict

Choose rclone when your priority is flexible, scriptable file operations across cloud providers, with mounting and transfer tools in one free project. Its strongest reason to choose it is the combination of breadth, automation, and server-side transfer support. Look elsewhere if you need a polished GUI, a mobile app, or crypt that conceals metadata as well as file contents.
