Overview

RomM is a self-hosted ROM library manager for people who play games through emulators. It suits collectors who want organization and play tools in one place, provided they are comfortable running a self-hosted app.

Its strongest case is breadth: library enrichment, browser play, save syncing and support for many platforms are combined without paid features. That range comes with a practical trade-off: RomM is not a hosted, hands-off service, and its iOS option is community-led rather than an officially reviewed client.

Key features

Collection management

RomM scans a collection and can enrich entries using IGDB, ScreenScraper, LaunchBox and MobyGames. It can fetch custom artwork from SteamGridDB, track RetroAchievements and lets users edit metadata. The project says it supports more than 400 platforms, including multi-disk games, DLC, mods, hacks and manuals. That scope makes it a stronger fit for varied collections than a simple ROM list; users with a small, already organized library may get less value from the added management layer.

A built-in patcher applies ROM hacks and translations on the fly, so users can manage patched play without treating patches as an entirely separate workflow. RomM also supports metadata editing, which gives users a way to correct or refine library entries.

Playing and syncing

Browser play uses EmulatorJS and Ruffle and requires no setup. Saves and states sync across devices, with conflict resolution when versions differ. Together with offline mode and controller support, those capabilities serve people who move between devices or prefer playing in a browser. They do not remove the need to operate the self-hosted app.

Access and integrations

Granular per-user permissions and OIDC single sign-on make RomM relevant to teams or households that need differentiated access. Integrations include ES-DE and Pegasus exports, LaunchBox import and a REST API, offering several ways to connect a library to existing tools.

Official clients include a Windows Playnite plugin, Argosy for Android handhelds and Grout for Linux handhelds. A native iOS app is a community project; RomM's team says it does not regularly review community-project source code. That makes iOS the less assured part of an otherwise broad platform picture.

Pricing

RomM — 0.00 USD per free. The plan is free forever, licensed under AGPL-3.0, and has no paid features. There is no free trial because there is no paid tier to trial. The zero-cost model avoids subscription or renewal decisions, while self-hosting means RomM is best suited to users willing to run the software themselves rather than pay for a hosted option.

Platforms

RomM lists Android, iOS, Linux, Windows, web and self-hosted support, alongside an API. Its project states support for more than 400 gaming platforms. Official Windows, Android handheld and Linux handheld clients extend its reach; the iOS app is community-led and not regularly reviewed by the team.

Who it's for

RomM fits emulator players with a substantial or diverse ROM collection who want metadata, artwork, patching and achievement tracking alongside play and cross-device save syncing. It is also a reasonable choice for teams or households that can use per-user permissions and OIDC. It is less suitable for someone seeking a ready-made hosted library, or who requires a regularly reviewed official iOS client.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad library coverage: support for more than 400 platforms and formats such as multi-disk games, DLC, mods, hacks and manuals can accommodate collections that outgrow a basic catalog.
Play and progress tools in one package: browser play, controller support, offline mode and cross-device save and state sync reduce the need to separate library browsing from play.
Open, no-cost model: the project is AGPL-3.0 licensed, states that it has no tracking or paid features, and gives users control of their data.
Useful integration surface: REST API access, exports to ES-DE and Pegasus, LaunchBox import and official clients make it more adaptable to an existing setup.

Cons

Self-hosting is central: users looking for a managed, ready-to-use hosted service should look elsewhere.
iOS assurance is limited: the native app is community-made, and the team does not regularly review community project code.
Setup support is community-oriented: the project directs users to Discord for setup help and discussion rather than describing a paid support tier.

Alternatives

LaunchBox is worth considering for a Windows or Android library workflow with a free forever Starter plan; its Regular Windows plan costs 30.00 USD per once, billed as “Own it forever.” Choose it instead if LaunchBox's platform coverage and plan structure suit you better than a self-hosted RomM setup.

RetroArch is a free, open-source project available on Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows. It is the alternative to consider when broad device availability and an established open-source project are the priority.

Bezel offers a free launcher with all systems and features, plus optional premium pricing for Bezelie's deeper AI features. Consider it when you want a launcher with a free core and an optional AI upgrade.

ES-DE Frontend is fully open source and free to download and use on Windows, macOS and Linux; Android is a paid app. It may suit readers who want a frontend across those desktop platforms rather than RomM's self-hosted collection manager.

GOG Galaxy is free on macOS and Windows and requires a free GOG account; some platform-specific features require the relevant gaming client. It is a fit to consider for a desktop setup built around those clients.

Heroic Games Launcher is a free GPLv3-licensed option for Linux, macOS and Windows. Choose it when a cross-desktop launcher is the more relevant tool.

Lutris is a free, Linux-only gaming platform built using open-source technology. It is a narrower alternative for Linux users seeking that kind of platform.

Pegasus Frontend is free and open source, with no ads or in-app purchases, for Android, Linux, macOS and Windows. Consider it when those platforms and a frontend are the priority.

Verdict

Choose RomM if you want a self-hosted home for a broad ROM collection, with metadata and artwork enrichment, browser play, patching and save sync at no cost. Its strongest advantage is how much it combines without paid features; look elsewhere if you want managed hosting or need an official iOS app whose code is regularly reviewed by the project team.
