The Mortal Kombat community is reeling after claims from a prominent leaker that NetherRealm Studios has scrapped all planned Year 3 content for Mortal Kombat 1, including a highly anticipated story expansion. This news comes as a shock to many fans who were expecting continued support for the game, especially after the recent release of the “Khaos Reigns” expansion.
The leaker, known as _FateUnknown_ on Twitter and Reddit, alleges that the decision to cancel future content stems from the disappointing sales of the “Khaos Reigns” DLC. Released in September 2024, the expansion was met with mixed reception, with many criticizing its short length, high price point, and lackluster story content. This, coupled with the already controversial $70 price tag of the base game and the presence of in-game monetization, seems to have contributed to the DLC’s poor performance.

While NetherRealm Studios has yet to officially confirm or deny these claims, the implications of this leak are significant. If true, this means that players can likely say goodbye to any hopes of seeing Kombat Pack 3, additional characters, and further story expansions. This news is particularly disheartening for fans who were eager to see how the narrative of Mortal Kombat 1 would further unfold.

The negative reception of “Khaos Reigns” is reflected in its user reviews on platforms like Steam, where it currently sits at “Overwhelmingly Negative.” This backlash seems to have significantly impacted the DLC’s sales, ultimately leading to the reported cancellation of future content.
A Pattern of Controversy
This isn’t the first time Mortal Kombat 1 has found itself at the center of controversy. Since its release, the game has faced criticism for its high price point, aggressive monetization strategies, and perceived lack of innovation. The base game’s $70 price tag was a point of contention for many, especially considering the industry standard of $60 for AAA titles.

My Personal Take:
As a long-time Mortal Kombat fan, I’m deeply saddened by this news. I was thoroughly enjoying Mortal Kombat 1 and was eagerly looking forward to more story content and characters. I believe that “Khaos Reigns,” while flawed, had some redeeming qualities, and I was hoping that NetherRealm Studios would learn from its mistakes and deliver an even better experience in future expansions.
