Use ChatGPT as a writing and planning partner: define the song’s purpose, build a form and chord plan, develop a singable melody and lyrics, then check every musical choice by playing or singing it. Treat its suggestions as drafts; move the parts you want to keep into your instrument or music software and revise them by ear.
Set Up A Useful Brief
Before asking for notes or lyrics, decide what the song needs to do. A prompt that names the listener, mood, style, point of view, and practical limits gives you something to judge each suggestion against. Avoid relying on a genre label alone: describe the sound or feeling you want in plain language, and name any instruments or vocal range only if you have a real preference.
Start with a brief like this, replacing the bracketed details:
I’m writing a [genre or sound] song for [listener or occasion]. The feeling should be [mood], and the song should be about [specific situation or idea]. I want [solo voice / duet / instrumental]. Keep the arrangement suitable for [available instruments or skill level]. First, ask me up to three questions about choices that are still unclear. Don’t write lyrics yet.

Choose A Song Shape Before Filling It In
A form gives the song a path: the verse can introduce or develop an idea, while the chorus can deliver the central line or musical release. Ask ChatGPT for options, then choose a structure that fits the story and intended length. You do not need to accept every section it proposes.
Based on my brief, suggest two song forms using section labels only. For each section, say what its job is in one short phrase. Keep the form compact and make the chorus the clearest statement of the song’s idea. Don’t write lyrics or add a bridge unless it serves the story.
Pick one form and ask for a compact outline. If the song is meant to build gradually, ask where the energy should rise and what musical change could create that lift. If it should stay intimate, ask how to create contrast without adding more instruments.

Build And Check The Chord Plan
Ask for a small number of chord options rather than a finished arrangement. Tell ChatGPT whether you want a major, minor, or unresolved feel, and name an instrument or playing level if that affects what you can use. Chords in a text reply are only a proposal: check that you can play them, that the changes feel right at your intended tempo, and that the progression supports the song’s mood.
Suggest three four-chord progressions for the verse and a contrasting chorus progression for this song. Give chord names, one possible key for each option, and a plain-language description of the mood. Keep the shapes beginner-friendly on [instrument], if possible. Don’t claim a progression is original. I’ll choose one and test it by playing.
If a progression is awkward, give the specific constraint: ask for fewer chord changes, easier shapes, or a different emotional direction. If you do not know the key or music theory terms, ask for simpler alternatives and verify them on your instrument.

Find A Singable Melody
Describe the melody in terms you can hear or sing: where it should sit in your voice, whether the chorus should rise, and which words need emphasis. Ask for a short phrase at a time. Text descriptions of pitches can be hard to interpret, so ask for note names only if you can check them; otherwise, use the response as a contour idea and sing several variations over the chords.

For the chorus over [chord progression], suggest three short melody contours in words: one that stays mostly low, one that rises toward the main line, and one with a small leap for emphasis. Keep the phrases comfortable for a [low / middle / high] voice. Mark the word that should receive the strongest musical emphasis. Don’t write lyrics yet.
Sing each option out loud at a comfortable tempo. Keep the one that feels natural and memorable, even if it differs from the written suggestion. If a phrase strains your voice or makes the important word land awkwardly, ask for a narrower range or a different rhythm.

Write Lyrics Around The Musical Phrase
Give ChatGPT the story, section outline, and melody constraints. Ask it to avoid generic filler and to use concrete details from your brief. For a chorus, decide what the listener should remember first; for verses, use details that move the situation forward rather than repeating the chorus idea.
Draft two chorus options for my song about [specific situation]. The main idea is [central thought]. Use plain, singable language and a memorable title line. Keep each line short enough for the melody contour I described, and put the key word on the emphasized beat. Avoid clichés and don’t invent personal details. After the drafts, identify any line whose syllable count may be difficult to sing.

Choose or rewrite lines yourself. Sing the words over the chords and melody, speaking them in rhythm first if the fit is unclear. If a line feels crowded, ask for shorter alternatives that preserve its meaning; if the rhyme sounds forced, ask for versions that prioritize natural speech.

Arrange A Simple Demo
Once the core sections work, ask for an arrangement plan that respects the setup you actually have. Be specific about the instruments you can play or record. A useful plan states what enters in each section and how the energy changes, without assuming access to a particular instrument or production feature.
Make a simple section-by-section arrangement for [instrument(s) I have]. Keep the verse sparse and make the chorus feel fuller using only those instruments. For each section, describe the part’s role and whether it enters, drops out, or changes. Don’t add gear or software I haven’t named.
Record a rough performance and listen for the essentials: can you follow the form, does the chorus feel distinct, and are the words understandable? Revise one issue at a time. In the United States, the Copyright Office says works generated entirely by AI are not copyrightable, prompts alone do not make someone the author, and only human-authored parts of a mixed work may be protected. Applicants registering a work containing more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material must disclose it and describe the human author’s contribution.
